I've connected panasonic DMR-ES20 dvd recorder to time warner sci/atlanta explorer 8300 HDC cable box. it records, but about 1:30 to 2:00 into recording, i get message on screen: "your tv does not allow display of this program through the dvi input source. please chose another tv input source." the cable box is connected to dvd recorder thru s-video (and i've tried composite video [yellow rca cable])- same error message when using both.. cable box to tv is hdmi cable, and dvd recorder to tv is component (rgb) cables. why is it doing this, and -short of disconnecting hdmi/component cables- is there anything i can do to resolve this? Thanks!
"cable box to tv is hdmi cable"
Everything I've read on the web says cable box to tv connection must also use component (rgb) cables. The error is coming from the cable box (STB). All the Scientific Atlanta (SA) cable boxes seem have this Digital Rights Management (DRM) bug and the only way to be totally rid of the error is to replace the digital connection from box to the TV with an analog connection.
I had the same problem after connecting a Scientific Atlantic Explorer 8600 HDC cable box/DVR using a HD cable to my LCD tv and connecting a cable from the cable box output, S-Video, and Video/Audio L/R cables to my Super VHS VCR. I got sound but no video after about 2 minutes. I connected a splitter to my cable from the outside and ran a patch cable to the cable box input and the VCR ant. input. Then connect RCA cables from the VCR output the the tv's input. Connect a cable from the ant. output on the VCR and to the tv's cable connection. Make sure you have the HD cable from the cable box to the tv. I can now watch stations the tv's digital tuner can pick up without the cable box or power up the cable box and watch everying, use a HD cable from my BR DVD box to the tv, and tape anything the VCR's analog tuner can pick up without any cable box problems and watch one show and tape another. You will be restricted on the number of channels you can tape but no DVI errors. Friends who have the old style cable boxs for analog channels (not HD) don't have this problem. They set the channel on the cable box and VCR and tape ok.

Very true millermoto. The box can power all the analog outputs, or just the HDMI port. If the HDMI is being used, then the box freaks out at random, displaying an error. Try the component cables, and whatever else you need. I'd restart it after you get everything connected without the HDMI--just to be safe.
