I have a North Star generator running on gasoline. The idle has become erratic causing lights to go from dim to bright while running. Any ideas?

Check the engine to frame ground is in good condition.

It's very common for the connectors between the alternator and power outlets to come loose on these. Give them a check and tighten as necessary.

Check the connections between the alternator (generator) and the regulator/output connectors.

COULD BE GROUND PROBLEMS OR THE TACH GOING BAD.EVEN THOUGH CAR SEEMS TO BE RUNNING GOOD IDLING GOOD.SOME TIMES A SPARK PLUG MISFIRE.CAUSING A LITTLE ROUGH IDLING CAUSING TACH NEEDLE TO GO CRAZY.I SEEN ALTERNATOR WITH VOLTAGE REGULATOR GOING BAD CAUSE A POWER SURGE CAUSING HEAD LIGHTS TO DIM A LITTLE THEN BRIGHT WHILE ENGINE IDLING.THIS WILL CAUSE TACH METER NEEDLE BOUNCE AROUND ALSO.

hi it sounds like it could be your alternator i think you call them generators in the US, try testing it with a volt meter, connect it to the battery and start car, if it puts out 13 to 13.5 volts on idle and 14 to 14.5 volts when you rev the engine it is ok, anything under that or even over that meens that it is faulty hope that helps

How much have you driven vehicle? You need to drive long enough for computer to reset refrence points onboard. If that does not work, you have a bad voltage limiter on your instrument cluster board!

wire a 120v 15a to 9vdc or 12vdc battery make sure you have no voltage out of the 240 side. with the unit running plug into the 120v receptacl QUICKLY pull out. check power out put. if it did'nt work check your battery, than do it again twice as long. you must check all component before doing this to make sure you don't have any other fail-er. this is danger-us be careful. good luck

Normally the way it works is if you plug in your AC Adapter to a laptop the computer screen will Brighten up since its no longer running off of battery and is actually charging . The reason why it should go dim is when you unplug the Ac adapter it goes dim to save battery life and last longer. If you are getting a really dim you can check and make sure that the Ac adapter jack on the adapter or motherboard isnt loose and it could be having contact to the unit and be loose inside and every small movement causes it not to charge / charge in and out and would cause this Dim effect. Again this depends on how old the computer is and I dont really think its the LCD or backlight going bad but you can try to mess with the screen brightness and If im not mistaken on that model it should be the FN key and the Right > and Left < Key for lower and higher brightness. Give that a try and check the adapter connection and you can pin point the issue . Hopefully it doesnt come worst to worst which could be a bad LCD going bad or damaged lcd internal cable.
