Wont Post get 9 beeps!

Hi, With my IBM Netfinity 3500 M20 it won?t post. All HDDS power up and fans. I get no display and I get a beep sequence like this: 3 short beeps, pause 3 short beeps, pause 3 short beeps, I am unsure what these beeps mean. If I take everything out and power it on it doesn?t do any beeps and won?t show a display. Any help is much appreciated! Cheers, Nick

This problem is due to the mix of registered and unregistered DIMMs. 64Mb and 128 Mb DIMM's are unregistered memory technology 256MB is registered memory technology. A mix of registered and unregistered memory prevents the server from completing startup, and results in an error beep sequence and a blank screen

    Use registered its best!

What is 3-3-2 beep tone meaning

System doeIf there is one DIMM in the system the memory row/bank may be disabled when there is a memory failure. The system will not boot because it has no memory to use. If the DIMM is replaced with one of the exact same type and size, then the system will continue not to boot. BIOS cannot tell when a DIMM has been replaced with one of the exact type and size, therefore BIOS believes it is still the bad DIMM and will not use it.

Here are two possible workarounds:

1. After replacing the defective DIMM, continue to reboot the system until you hear the "no memory" post beep sequence (3-3-3) during POST (no video display). After three (3) incomplete boots, a "062 three consecutive boot failure. Using default CMOS configuration caches are off" error will occur. At this point BIOS will go back to the default settings and begin to use the new DIMM. However, if you have disabled the 3 boot fail count (this setting may not be available in all servers) in Setup, then BIOS will not turn the DIMM row/bank back on.
-=OR=

2. Remove the DIMM. Power on the system until the "no memory" post beep sequence (3-3-3) is heard. The memory row/bank will now be marked as being empty. Power off the system and put a good DIMM back into the system. The memory DIMM row/bank is re-enabled and the system boots normally.

NOTE: If more than one DIMM (or more than one DIMM set) is installed in the server and one memory (or one memory set) row/bank is disabled due to a memory failure then, the user must go into setup and re-enable the row/bank after replacing the bad DIMM.

Thinkpad X41 starting two short beeps, fan error and shuts of

The IBM POST code states that after the 2 beeps the screen displays the error.
In the case you have a faulty fan and it needs to be replaced.

Boot Problems... Complicated...

The IBM Netfinity 5600 is a complicated beast for sure. You really need to get a copy of the Netfinity Manual from IBM (not on the web site fyi.). It's as big as the machine unfortunately. In section 3, p.124 it lists 3-3-3 beep code as "No memory has been detected in the system" solution is "Reseat mem modules or install mem modules. If prob persists get machine serviced." On the previous page, 3 short beeps (only) on POST indicate "system mem error. combo only occurs when video bios cannot display error msg. replace the failing mem module." You might also want to check the light-path diagnostics inside the machine. A little light will be illuminated right beside the bad DIMM.

Running Non-ECC Ram in a IBM Netfinity 3500 M20

Dear NickB,

In my experience working with many servers, Non-ECC memory will not work on a machine that requires ECC memory. It is possible in some servers to disable the ECC mode in the system BIOS to allow non-ECC memory to work, but you will often end up with performence problems later on.
Hope this information helps, let me know if I can be of any further assistance.
