I bought a used husqvarna 340se 16'' chainsaw and I need to know the proper oil to gas mixture ratio. Anyone able to help me?
40 to 1 is the ratio.
Once almost ubiquitous, the 1-in-40 oil-to-fuel ratio has fairly well, long since gone be the wayside for high performance saws, includingg Husqvarnas. For one, the greater compression and high-output made possible by special additive 50:1 oils has made possible lower capacity, lighter weight saws that are more amenabe to purchase and use by the general-comsuming public. Where 40:1 is still mfr recommended or supplied, it will be with lower-grade, non-high-performance saws. Now we have a 17 helpful, consensus answer.

Husqvarna recommends a 50:1 for all of their chainsaws as well as their "LS" (Low Smoke) chain oil which has special adhesion additives. 40:1 will not hurt much but will results in increased smoke and plug fouling--and not provide any extra engine protection.
All the Huskies I've had have been 50:1. I'm pretty certain the 340 is as well.
Huskies require 50:1 however, they also say to add some oil to the mixture, which really makes it 40:1.....also use 93 0ctane always.Regardless, I also add Sea Foam to all of my small engines and 700cc UTV.
BEAR IN MIND...that while Hooskies are characterized for 1:50 oil:fuel ratio that does not mean any 2 stroke oil at 1:50...ONLY 1:50 labeled oil. If available, you must purchase oil clearly labeled 50:1 (fuel:oil--or 1:50 oil:fuel).
Other mix ratios are, in fact, possible--in a pinch--but always follow the mix instructions on the oil container up to the maximum fuel:oil (or miniumun oil:fuel) mix ratio advised by the saw mfr.
The saw owner manual gives preferred and alternative-mixture-ratio oils that can be used. That will be a general rule of thumb for all saws with the exception that you must never under-concentrate the oil to fuel ratio that is recommended by the saw manufacturer. That means, for example, that 1:50 characterized saws, like the Hooskie, have the greatest leeway, being able to use 1:50 oil and everything of higher oil concentration: such as 1:40. However, a saw characterized by mfr for, say, 1:40-labelled oil may not use 1:50 oil mixed in fuel at 1 part per 50 oil to fuel ration--its fuel must be mixed 1-in-40 parts oil-to-fuel...even if only 1:50 labeled oil is available.
In mechanics terms, oil-to-fuel concentration is a function of piston (ring) to cylinder clearance tolerances: greater clearance requiring more concentrated oil to fuel; "tighter" toleraces requiring oils able to withstand the stresses of lower concentration. As a consequence, for example, a modern "Hooskvyarna", with its low clearances for high compression, operates optimally at the 1:50 lube concentration. It will work with a more concentrated lube ratio, but not as efficently or powerfully due to the greater drag and lower compression associated with the more concentrated oil-fuel blend.
