Panasonic Viera TH-42PV7HS Plasma keeps shutting down

Frustrating symptoms on brand new Panasonic Viera 42" plasma! tv just turns itself off sometimes without warning or if changing to certain channels. leaves red light flashing for a while then red light goes away permanently so no longer in normal standby mode. any attempts with remote gives flashing green light on tv. manual power off and on restarts tv but auto off again. found during manual power on, keep changing channel on remote till stable picture appears. then use remote to shut down tv - solid red light indicates normal standby mode. then use remote to turn on again, and it works... till next time it happens. but what is technical fault??

red light flashes 12 times each time... what fault code does this mean?

  • Anonymous Nov 30, 2007

Yes, I have the same problem. My Panasonic Viera PX600 switches itself off and the red light next to the on/off switch flickers and there's a simultaneous clicking sound.

This is drving me mad, does anyone have an answer to this problem?

At manual power on, the standby light comes on as usual. Then when the power button on the remote is pressed and tv tries to switch on, but after about 5 seconds goes to red light which flashes twice, then pauses, then continues to flash twice and so on. Other than pay the repair guy $198 aud just to look at the tv, when it should be warranty anyway, is there any other solution?

My new 42inch panasonic plasma screen tv (TH-42PC77U) was great for a day.  Today, it'll play for approximately 2 hours and turn itself off.  I will have to wait approximately 5-10 minutes, and then I hear a clicking noise and I am able to turn the tv back on for another approximate 2 hours.  Can anyone tell me what I need to do to fix this problem.  The tv is only approximately 4 months old.  Thank you

One month old Panasonic TH-50PZ80A plasma TV just switched itself off in the middle of watching a DVD, the red light repeatedly flashed 7 times, stopped, then kept repeating the cycle. Am trying to fix it now using the reboot suggestions. We live in the tropics, so maybe thermals is an issue??

my Viera Panasonic Plasma shuts off then I get 12 blinking red lights next to the power button....what does this mean?

  • Anonymous Feb 24, 2009

I have my pc hooked up to my panasonic 42". I got a blinking red light the other day. I unplugged the tv then plugged it back in. works fine soo far. If it was a thermal shutdown I dont think it would have gone back on just after unplugging it.

  • Anonymous Mar 16, 2009

Anyone on the 7 flashing lights? I have the 7 flashing lights and I have the 42PF9431D/37 model TV. One thing that I know is wrong with it is I have a blown white boxed resistor on the main power board. I actually have 2 now because I bypassed the first one just to see if I could get it to work. Having said that I don't think that is the root of the problem. Could it be the SSB. Just trying to figure this out.

Our 42 inch panasonic plasma turned itself off and it too has 7 flashes and then a pause and it will not turn on at all. Not by the button or the remote. No sound or picture and I cannot get the flashing red lights to stop unless we unplug it...We reset the remote and the cable box but nothing... Please help .. we lack funds to fix this or we would pay someone here.

Ok guys... The 12 light flash is an error code that means the H board needs to be replaced. This may, or may not be the final solution, but its a start. The problem with mine was that there was a wire that had been pinched on the right side. Its in the front by the speaker. You will have to remove the front part of the TV to get to it. If a tech comes and looks at your TV's . Give him all these options. Also have him replace the power source just in case. Mine is 100% better. Hope this helps.

Hi there, have the same kind of problem twice so far after was bought for me as x-mas present (although my viera isnt plasma, its an LCD TX-32LMD70A)..

I Pulled out the mains plug for about 10-20 seconds and then plugged back in (power button at top was pushed in, in the on position, so when the power was on, the tv just goes straight on). It then worked.

i would however like to know why this happens ( i really hope this isnt a hardware problem, as like many others... its only months old!!)

hope this helps

We purchased our Plasma Panasonic from Sears Canada in 2008. It stopped working the same way as explained by others - just shut down won't come back on - red light flashing. I always buy from Sears as I believed they stood by the products they sell. I do realize it is 'Panasonic' and not Kenmore but I still believed in them to sell good products to their customers. I don't think we'll win this war to get fair treatment on our faulty product - but maybe some of these corporations need to fight the battle for us ! The economy is tight and we're trying to survive out here !!!! Why should our hard earned cash be stolen from us like this !

  • marioplaz Aug 04, 2011

I purchased my 42"plasma tv in 2009 and last night when it wast time for a good night sleep, I turned it off with the remote control and it turn on by it self like if I had hit the power button again but I didn't ,and it just started shutting off with out me touching it or the remote control, and it was going back on and off on and off over and over again, so I pulled the plug from the back of the TV for about 10 minutes and plug it back in and it keep on doing it the same thing over and over again, so I pulled the plug again and next morning plug it back in and it did it again but I didn't give up so finally for the last time I repeated my own process of troubleshooting and its working fine, for a moment I thought I had to visit the store (k-mart, ontario CA.) to purchase a different brand because after reading all the problems that PANASONIC PLASMA TV owners are having and with out warranty, I was running out hope and options. I hope this was helpful, I really don't know what is causing this problems but that was my solution. ps if you have warranty don't do what I did use it. I wish I had purchase one because who knows if it will happened again.

Hi Guys, looks like, it is a thermal shutdown issue. Try the following: Keep a fan and direct the air towards the bottom vent holes. Switch on the TV. Keep it on continuously for more than 2 hours and see if the TV shuts off again. If not, then it confirms Thermal shutdown. Check if you have kep any papers, cloth etc very close to TV. Keep the TV ventilated. Let there be air circulation.

Do this and post your experience.

Panasonic TH-42PA20 with 7 led blinks is a safety feature to shutdown the unit before more parts are damaged.
Unfortunately the circuit that controls that fails too... Replace the SC board and you'll be alright.(board on the left (back view)
For the techs.. check the comparator circuit that drives the sos1 signal.
Good luck

After reading everyones posts I belief the overall solution would be to boycott buying Panasonic products all together. It seems as though I was on the fortunate side. I bought mine in July of 2008 so I almost got four years out of it. I remember regular tv's lasting way longer. My dad still has an RCA tv which is 28 years old never needed any repairs. I swear things built in America are meant to fall apart.

Definitely an indication of an overheat problem. My 5 yr old 57" Viera experienced this for the first time last night. Holding the power swith stopped the flashing (11x) light, But powering back up the set would come on then go off after a few seconds. Unplugging didn't help either. Looking at the back of the set, I noticed some air vents that were pretty well clogged with dust. I brought in my portable air tank and thoroughly blew out all of the vents in the back of the set. Turned it back on and have not had the problem since. Can't blame Panasonic at all. Heat and dust is the enemy of all electronics.

If eleven flashes, either take the back off & clean the fans and hoover up the dust or use a torch & look through the back grills where the fans are, see if both spin when turning on. Then use a hoover with a brush head and get as much dust off the bad fan & make sure it spins when moved with the brush. Then turn it on & it should work. One of my fans just stopped spinning because of the amount of dust on it. I cleaned it as much as possible using the second method & "hey presto" it started spinning & works again. If/when it happens again i'll take the back off & give both fans a proper clean. Hope this helps

Hi everyone and Happy Holidays, I purchased a Panasonic Viera plasma tv model TC-P42ST36 a few weeks ago, and about a week later after my purchase the tv shut off automatically. I turned the tv on and didn't noticed anything unusual, and a few days later I was watching a movie and a message showed up in the screen. It said the tv would shut down in a minute or two. I pressed the ok button in the remote control and message went away and the tv didn't shut down. A few days later I took a nap and the tv shut down, so when I woke up I noticed the tv was off. I started wondering about the issue, I went to forum and and ask my roommate if he had noticed any similar issue with his LCD tv which is a couple years old. That's when I found out that some if not all recent models tvs are eco friendly and they shut off automatically after certain time, usually 2 or 3 hrs if you don't press any button. I guess the tv assumes you fell to sleep or forgot to shut it off. Also, some tvs do the same thing when they are connected to DirectTV box and maybe to other servicers' boxes to avoid tv eating out faster and to save energy. I would check in the setting menu the eco/energy saving mode, and make sure that either is on (in my tv it says it shut off automatically after 3 hrs with no remote control action), or if it is off you may try something else. I hope this helps, particularly for those that have a recent tv model. Good luck and Happy Holidays.

To all those who want to boycott Panasonic for crappy products: I'm very sorry you are having problems with your Tvs but all my tvs are Panasonic and I've had them for years without any issues. The sad truth of the matter is that you are a very small percentage of Panasonic
TV consumers. Trust me, if their products were as widely faulty or all "meant to fail" as some people on this blog have alleged, there would definitely be a boycott or widespread recall of some sort.

My Panasonic tx-55as640 has started to turn itself off its only 14 months old and only used for up to 4 hrs a day. PC WORLD are not interested. I will try Panasonic directly tomorrow. This is obviously a design fault. My old TV lasted over 10 years.

Why does everyone assume that if anything is wrong it’s a “design default”? In fact, most issuers are due to settings. Your TV will shut off automatically after three hours of no remote activity or front panel activity. You will see a “no activity shut off” warning message at 1,2 and 3 minutes before it occurs. Use your remote control to select OK when u get the warning & msg will go away and the TV will not shut off. This happens when u don’t use your tv remote for energy saving in case you fall asleep or forget to turn a TV off. This happens frequently today with many using after market, satellite or cable remotes.

I just bought a panasonic 42" led tv. in half an hour after the installation it keep restarting on and off about 3-4 times per hour. it less than 40 minutes from installation. I call the technician that install it, he just ask me to do reset to factory setting twice.. I will ask them refund my money. I dont think that warranty will solve this, why do panasonic wasting money for replace broken part when they can solve it before their product come out from factory.

Ive got this problem. the red light is continuously flashing and wont turn on at all, its only 2 days old!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, so 11 flashes means there's a fan problem, we took the back off, screwed the fans off and gave them a careful clean to get rid of all the dust. And bingo , working fine now. My husband is very happy. Now we don't have to spends hundreds to get it fixed

How to by panasonic panal th 42pv7hs

Yes it should still be covered find ur direction book and check out ur warranty and see if Panasonic will come out and cover it. Always beef up ur story you have been Panasonic owners for years when u call them. You have gotten all of ur friends and family to switch ect... Even if it's not covered sometimes loyalty goes a long way.

My Panasonic 42 inch plasma tv randomly shuts off. when turned on it flashes 6 time pauses for 4 and flashes 6 times. Modal # is TH-42PZ85U

Check out the charts to determine the faulty part. Likely, there is a burned out component and it needs the board needs to be replaced.

Panasonic Viera 46" plasma~no sound, no picture

I would use the warranty at Bestbuy at that point. Opening up the TV would most likely void the warranty.

42" Plasma TV Problem

same frustrating symptoms on brand new 42inch here! tv just turns itself off sometimes without warning or if changing to certain channels. leaves red light flashing for a while then red light goes away. any attempts with remote gives flashing green liht on tv. manual power off and on restarts tv but auto off again. found while manual power on keep changing channel on remote till stable picture appears. then use remote to shut down tv - solid red light indicates standby mode. then use remote to turn on again... till next time it happens. but what is technical fault??
