Dell s2309wb flickers and then turns off at any brightness setting under 73%. After turning off and on, shuts off again after a few seconds. 4.7 year old monitor. I usually run it at a brightness of 50% and contrast at 70%... when the problem presented, it was preceded by slight flickering for probably 2 or 3 minutes and then it went black. I recycle the power and it does it again. I did the dell self-test with the VGA cable unplugged and everything is normal. It is running normally now with no flickering at 73% brightness and 50% contrast- if I lower brightness to 70% the flickering begins which will lead to the power down. Monitor manufactured in 10/2008!!! Can someone recommend a better manufacturer? I know that computer techs think dell computers are **** (fortunately my computer is an HP). Is an HP 23" monitor more reliable than this? Thanks!!!
Older post DELL says its 10 years old made in 2008
yes,
did you test this monitor unplugged on PC using the OSD screen
for 10 seconds, each power on OSD works.
see if 50% brightness works, if yes, the PC has problems.
seems you did and did not test monitor on other PC
and did not test your PC on other monitor,.both simple tests.
you are now speculating that one brand is better that another,
Viewsonic is best, HP and deLL< others not so.
what you failed to do is test your PC with known good monitor
and test the monitor on a known good PC.
2 tests. that yell truth.
Id go Viewsonic, we have many here, not one failed ever.
2010 or newer,
back in before year 2010 LED monitors they had JUNK monitors.
with weak low life, CCFL tubes inside, as YOURS DOES.
all monitors had that then, its not maker name issue at ALL.
here is how I discover truth,
1: I PRETEND TO BUY THE MAIN BOARD IN YOUR MONITOR.
AND LOW AND BELOLD CCFL H3LL IS THERE,
I have posted these hard fact there at fixya 100 + times.
here it is 1 more time.
I have the same tubes in my garage ceiling laps 8ft long and do the same thing.

I would suggest trying another monitor to rule out your PC or monitor card. I would also check the video settings on the PC. Then assuming your cable/connector and video card are okay, it sounds like a lamp or lamp driver (a.k.a. ballast or inverter) issue. In other words, an internal issue that probably needs component-level troubleshooting.

Hi again,
Any luck with the Dell people?
A favor if I may, at your convenience, would appreciate if you can rate our Live Session as you see it fit.
Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
SOURCE: The monitor turns off and on repeatedly.
There is a loose connector on the cable or the cable attachment on the PC board. Jiggle the connector as its connected and see if this causes the LCD to fire up.

Thanks for the suggestion, I have finally found out that the back light for the monitor is culprit. Also dell people and confirmed it . They aggred for a replacement. Thanks for the suggestion again.

Hi,
It’s very likely your monitor
has failed. Most Dell monitors have a 3 year warranty, so if you got it before
three years, you could get it replaced by calling Dell. If you got the monitor
with the computer, you can check your warranty online from with your computer Service
Tag from http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/my_systems_info/details?c=us&l=en&s=gen
. If you bought the monitor separately, you would need an Order Number or
Customer Number for the purchase, or you could call Dell support and they could
pull it out with your registered phone number. Dell would also need the serial
number (starting with CN XXX..) from the back of the monitor.
