My dad was having problems getting his laptop (Compaq Presario V5000/V5305 With XP) to converse with his printer. Like an idiot, I mentioned putting the computer into Safe Mode to look for hidden drivers - blah blah. He tried to do that. He says that he only held the F8-key down while booting up his laptop until it beeped, and then he let go, and repeated that once more. But, he says it never showed him the screen asking him to choose a mode to boot up into. It just booted up normally. Then he shut it down, and the next time he tried to boot it up, he only got beeps and a blank screen. I have tried removing the battery. I have tested the memory stick in my laptop. It still continues only to beep when the computer comes on. One beep, then three beeps, then four beeps, then three beeps again. Then everything stops, and the screen is still blank. The computer whirs for a moment while this is going on, and then it is silent. The On Button stays lit. I have to hold it in for some seconds before it goes back off. Please let me know what else I can do. I'm sure this started with a simple driver conflict. Now I don't know what it's escalated into. Thank you.
U can try to take off the hdd, and at the same time, pls clean the memory slot in your laptop with a brush & some liquid solvent.. After that, try booting it without any HDD. If u did not see any error messages, try take out the CMOS backup battery and neasure its voltage or get it replaced. Pls revert...
Well this is a strange problem. Just want to tell you something as tip. When the computer pressing the F8 key may result in many consequences like this. First thing is that you shloud see the laptop's F8 key... What else is indicated in that key. Usually there is an option to change your deafault display device from the Laptop's TFT panel to an external monitor. And this is incorporated to the F8 fuction key as a secondary function. (for e.g. By pressing the Fn + F8 keys in IBM Think pad will shift the display to an external monitor.) Suggestion-1. So you should connect an external monitor to see whether this your case or not. If yes then pressing the same key will restore your display setting. Suggestion-2. Remove the memory modules and reinsert them one at a time (I fyou have more than one memory module) and try to work with the laptop. In the worst case you may need to arrange seperate working RAM module and check with it.

Thank you for you suggestions. However, it can't be that the display is changed. The computer actually will not boot up at all.
It whirs for a moment as it goes through the beeps, and then stops any activity (except for the On Button light. As far as the memory module goes, I did remove it. I tried it in my laptop which is exactly the same kind as my dad's. It worked fine in mine. Thanks again though... Anyone have any info on the beep sequence?
Well, I finally had to go ahead and send this laptop in for repair. As it turns out, a cable on the motherboard had gone bad and had to be replaced. Just thought I'd let you all know that's what those beeps were trying to tell me.
Thanks everyone for trying to help.
(IBM PC) On boot, I get the black screen after a few beeps, and then says it cannot find the operating system. As it is booting again, I open the CD Drive and insert the XP PRO CD that I have - then reboot a time or two and everything boots as it should. I'll be safe (maybe) for a few weeks - Then back to the black screen stuff.
