I loaded 5 music cd's into my HT740 system changer, and it closed ine. However, when I went to play the first cd, it locked up and subsequentially shut down.I presume that the cd's have shifted (this happened before) and are now, in effect, "stacked", so that the drawer mechianism won't let the dawer come out. Short of taking the unit apart, how can I get the drawer open so that I can rearrange the cd's ?
The best solution is to take off the top cover. It's easy to remove with, I believe, four screws. The carousel is located right underneath the cover, so all the CD's will be exposed. However, I don't think that this will solve the problem of not happening again, since this seems to be a problem with this particular model.

Unfortunately, it sounds like the relay or motor to open the drawer is either stuck or dead, which can cause the entire system not to play the discs even if the drawer is closed. First, try calling RCA Customer Support to see if warranty service/exchange can be made for the unit. Second, try taking it back to where it was purchased. IF all else fails, You can disassemble the unit (this voids the warranty - do at your own risk) and try to identify the motor and drawer mechanism- try removing the main casing to your stereo (unplugged of course) and ensure that the small belts & gears that operate the drawer mechanism are all in good working order by gently operating them by hand. If not, you can replace or try a repair, but it honestly may be cheaper (and better for your sanilty) to buy a new system.
This is a result of the deck kicking out you disc as an unacceptable media. This usually means that it can not read the data on the disc or the necessary TOC (Table of Contents). The other possibility is that your draw in detection switch has gone bad and when the processor- control type, tries to load a tray or close the drawer it is not getting the door closed signal. Depending on how the unit is programmed it might just sit there and do nothing or in your case throw the disc back out. It is kind of telling you it wants to go see a Technician. It could also be a bad belt that loads the Pickup assembly- it might be good enough to move the drawer in and out but the Pickup assembly needs more torque and it might not be there.
The problem is in the loading bay, sometimes 2 CD's will get jammed locking up the system, or the timing gear is out of sync, or possible broken gears.
THis happens when the drawer is jammed. Turn off the unit and turn it on and then use the disc skip from the remote so that the cds inside will change and then press the Open button.
