I can only get it to go off by unplugging it. It comes on but stays at the channel it's at.

You need the remote codes for your cable remote? (if so who is your provider?)
or you need to buy a remote control for the tv?
SOURCE: Looking for a remote for an old Emerson TV
Hi,
Call 1 800 Remotes or go to www.remotes.com. In the middle of the page type in the model number which in your case would be VT1920. I believe the original remote is not available anymore but you can get a substitute remote for that TV. Also have you considered getting a universal remote? Those work on any TV with any component. Try the first two suggestions and hopefully you will find what you are looking for...
Hope this helps,
Sincerely,
Raelyn
SOURCE: Can't find the input/video channel for my Emerson TV
universal remotes are tricky, if you have the pamphlet, often times there are several codes for each brand. you have to try all the emerson codes for your universal even tho the power, volume and channel functions may work with several emerson codes, some of these specialized buttons (like input) may only work on your TV with one specific code.
also, if there are any unlabeled buttons on the universal try them with each new emerson code.

Be patient and check with these codes one by one, till you find the code for your Emerson model.
NB: Switch OFF and switch ON your TV set, with its front panel power control switch, before trying an other code.
