As stated it depends on brand and type, Premix normally 12 hours, No powder type as fast as 5 minutes, Although I would not suggest you try 5 minute try 45 minute mud. Then it depends on temperature humidity air movement etc. It will dry faster but you have to work faster as well.

It does not have to be totally dry to start the next phase but if you touch it and it sticks to your finger it is to wet to apply another coat which you will now be using Topping Compound-

Here is a way to speed up dry time put a fan right next to it(called forced air) this will force the moister or water out of the compound and make it dry faster.

The time it takes for the joint compounds to dry depends on brand that your using. Generally 12 hours is enough, I like to let it dry over night.

I am prepping a back splash wall for tile I applied one coat of joint compound and before it dried it cracked is the product defective or am I do it wrong.

Joint compound shrinks when it dries If it cracked, you put it on to thickly. When you cover it with adhesive to mount the back splash, it shouldn't matter. If you want it to be smooth first, you can put a THIN coat of joint compound over it first. However, the cracks that are there will probably help the adhesive hold to the wall.

When changing gaskets and valve blades on dewalt emglo dw55155 air compressor do I need to lubricate gaskets when putting back together

Depends on the type of gasket.

Not a good idea to lubricate gaskets generally. Rubber or cork gaskets that are lubricated tend to be squeezed out of the joint instead of being compressed. Sometimes it is a good idea to bond such a gasket to one face with something like a latex adhesive. Rubber gaskets that fit into a groove can be lubricated because there is no chance of them being squeezed out of the joint. I tend to use a wetting smear of silicone sealant for such joints.

Standard paper or composition gaskets should mostly be fitted dry if the faces are good but the careful application of jointing compound can help overcome rough faces. Choose a low viscosity compound for thin joints and progressively higher viscosities for thicker joints.

Drywall screws show

Use setting type compound for filling over screws. This compound doesn't shrink and does a better job of covering them up. Light weight compound is fine but is soft. It does shrink as it dries so you'll need maybe 3 or 4 coats to get the dimple area covered. I use setting compounds on all my second coats for this reason. This applies to tapered seams, end or surface joints and corners. You want to tape the drywall with all purpose compound that does shrink so it pulls the tape tight when dry. I use the TapeBuddy taping tools for a tight, no blister seam. Let this dry and second coat with the setting type compound and your finishing project will go much faster.

Are Spackle and joint compounds the same thing?

They're not the same thing, spackle is used to fill in holes or indetations made from nails in drywall while joint compounds are used to join drywall panels together.

Do I have to mix my joint compound or can I just use it stright out of the bucket?

On pre-mixed buckets, a lot of dry-wallers add just a little water and whip it up when tape and texturing. It flows of the blade better. But, if you're just repairing a few holes, dings and gouges, then no real need............unless it's really thickened up on you.
If you have a partial bucket and are not going to use it for a while, you may want to flick some water on the surface and lay Saran wrap on the surface, then cap the bucket.

How many layers of joint compound should i put between two sheets of drywall?

at least 2. I would suggest to look closely after the second coat dries. if you have a smooth transition than it is fine, if not, a third thin coat should make the finished product look better

My PLAY-DOH compound is drying out. How can PLAY-DOH compound be softened or moistened?

To restore the softness to PLAY-DOH compound, try adding water one drop at a time and working it in to moisten the PLAY-DOH compound.

You can also try wrapping the PLAY-DOH compound in a damp paper towel, returning it to the container and replacing the cover. Let it sit overnight

Good Luck. RJ
