SOURCE: Sansa E260 Charging Problem
The battery may have become disconnected from the contacts, therefore it will not charge the battery but lights up when connected to the PC. Remove the 4 screws on the back, remove and re-seat the battery. Charge the device for a few hours. Best of Luck. p.s.- you can add to this question if this didnt help.

It's not suppose to say Refresh Database when you connect it to the
computer, it's only suppose to say that when you eject it OUT of your
computer.
Did you load a massive amount of files during your last sync?
I don't think there's any need in resetting it if it is able to turn
off and on. What I recommend doing is formatting it. Remember,
formatting the player will cause you to loose ALL your media stored in
the device. To format go to "My Computer" > "Sansa e260" right click
and go down to format.
If it formats, then good. Turn it on and it should say "Refresh
Database". Change the mode of your player to MTP(?) so that it will no
longer refresh the database after transferring media(?).
Connect it back to your computer and reload your media onto it that was
wiped out during the format. Now disconnect it and see if it works...
It should.
If that doesn't work this should do the job for you: http://sandisk.com/Retail/Default.aspx?C...
Always remember to update the firmware on your products, it is a wise idea to do so. (: http://sandisk.com/Retail/Default.aspx?C... < Get updates with that.
Drain the battery if whatever you do don't work. Sometimes removing the battery for a few seconds on putting it back in works.
If you think you attacked this problem from every angle and still no
luck. Contact sandisk: [email protected] Give them some time, their
swamped with emails at the moment.
SOURCE: Mac and our Sansa E260
This player is incompatible with the iTunes service. iTunes uses AAC files, which the Sansa player cannot read.
These are not particularly Mac compatible either - you must reformat it in the Macintosh, but if there's a way, this website will have it:

Renew your Rhpasody or Napster subscriptions and reload/resync the songs - those two service shave fixed-term licenses
SOURCE: my sansa e260 stopped working after unsuccessful formatting
I have guys, I just spoke with the Sansa representative. Even if you have Windows Vista, you do not need a drive for e260 given that Vista carries that drivers for it. If you have tried the steps above, but you Sansa still did not format successfully after using the recoverty tool. This is what you do:
Set you Sansa e260 in recovery mode
- set it to hold
- hold rec
- connect to computer while you are holding rec
- device should be now in recovrey mode
- go to my computer
- go to the folder 16B format
- you will see a text file
- don't worry about
- add a new folder and name Sansa.fmt
- wait up to 2 minutes
- message on your device should say formatting
- wait a few minutes for formatting to take place
- stop the device by removing it safely using windows Safely device removal tool on bottom right corner of your screen
- disconneting your Sansa and you should see a message upgrade finished, Sansa has been restored or something like that
- Power your Sansa on, and Bwala!!! your Sansa is back to normal.
Good luck
