Black spots are appearing on the left margin of the page. It's only six weeks old, so I don't think it's the cartridge or drum. Is there another solution?

I have a Brother Color Laser Printer, 4070, and black spots are now appearing on the left margin. It's new printer, only six weeks old, so I don't think I need to replace the drum or cartridge yet, at least I hope not. What other remedies, short of replacing something, are there for this problem?

I think I have the exact same problem, but with the color blue - you seem to have the color with black spots. My Brother HL-4070CDW printer is very new too - ordered on 2/17/09, I didn't get around to finally setting it up until a few weeks ago.

    Here's pics of my problem:

I posted about my problem too on fixya.com over here http://www.fixya.com/support/t2060775-co... and got some advice from rulds2008

    who said the following:

"Replace the cartridge if that dont do it its the write head fouled up
with ink or just plain died all togeather, dried ink can cause this to
happen check and see if you can clean it out with 70 percent isp.
alcohal if the issue still does not resolve its new printer time."

My next step is to e-mail Brother

Remove the toner cartridge that is causing the dot, by holding the handle of the cartridge and lifting it up and out of the drum unit. Once you have removed the toner cartridge, check in the open slot where the toner was installed for dots, smudges or paper spec#s on the drum surface cylinder. 17. If you see something out of the ordinary, please try to gently (do not scrub or use wiping motion, because this may damage the drum), cleanthe drum surface with a cotton swab until the dust or paper powder comesoff. I get a black line down the left side of the page when a document is printed

Either the black cartridge is bad or the fuser roller is bad. Pull out the black cartridge and gently pull down the flap that runs across the cartridge. Look at the drum inside. If you don't see a line running around the drum or a clump of toner on the drum where the black line appears on the paper, your problem is a bad fuser.

Prints with lines to the right margin of the page. How can this be corrected?

This can depend on if they are white or black lines and if you can feel a texture on the paper. Most often the cause is a bad toner cartridge. If you are using generic toner cartridges, I would suggest trying a new HP one instead to see if it clears up. If you feel a deep texture to it, the fusing unit may be wearing out and need to be replaced.

Black smudges down left side of page

How do I clean white or black spots on printed documents? Description: First make 10 to 15 copies of a blank, white sheet of paper.
If you still see the spots on printed documents after making multiple copies, clean the drum unit as follows:

  1. Remove the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly, and then remove the toner cartridge from the drum unit.
  2. Position the print sample in front of the drum unit so you will know the exact position on the drum that is causing the poor print.
  3. all-ug-19.gif
  4. Turn the black gear on the drum as you check the surface of the OPC drum.
The OPC drum is photosensitive so do not touch it with your fingers.
  5. all-ug-20.gif
  6. When you find the substance on the drum surface that matches the print sample, gently dab the surface of the OPC drum with a cotton swab that is lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol.
  7. Note
      • Do not use a scrubbing or wiping motion because this might damage the drum.
        all-ug-21.gif
      • Do not try to clean the surface of the OPC drum with a sharp object, such as a ball-point pen, because this might cause permanent damage to the drum unit.
  8. If the print quality still has not improved you need to install a new drum.

What can we do about dark toner spots that are appearing on the right side of documents we print? We have tried using a can of air spray to clean the inside of the printer, but to no avail.

I have a Brother HL 4040cn color laser printer and I had the same problem. On every page I printed there were these black dots that appeared down the right side of the page in regular intervals. I tried the automatic drum cleaner and that didn't work. I opened the printer from door, removed the black toner cartridge and looked at the drum. Sure enough there was a speck of black crusted toner stuck to the drum. I used a q-tip and lightly scrubbed at the spot to remove the toner then I used the gear on the left side of the drum to rotate it and check for any other smudges and there were none. Put the toner cartridge back in and it was good to go again...no black dots!!

Hope this helps someone because I couldn't find the solution myself when I searched.

Unwanted 'dots' on printout

There is a dot somewhere on the drum, remove the drum and toner cartridge from the machine, then remove toner from drum. Look at the shiny roll, you can turn it from the black gear on the side. Once you find the dot use a cue tip dipped into little bit of alcohol and clean it off.

11 blue dots print out down the left hand side of documents

It's probably the toner cartridge again. See if you can spot defects at the cyan drum unit that matches the marks on your printout.

I think I damaged the drum, is this a recoverable error?

try printing 10 test pages and see if it gets at all better by the tenth one, you may need a new printer cartridge though, if you are buying refurbished toner cartridges you get a bad one every once in a while but you can usually return it

Dots on the left side margin

This problem comes from drum cartridge, you may try:
1) take out drum cartidge open drum cover clean the surface at leftside(using soft brush) and check drum surface at leftside, there is damage if you see the color surface appear a broken-ring at leftside(the color changed), you have to change new drum cartridge,
2) sometimes cause cartidge clean brush dirty can not do well cleaning job, just clean this parts at leftside well then turning drum a little there is no toner appear at surfac leftside if ok.

Small group of spots repeating on page

Have you tried contacting Okidata, 2000 Bishops Gate Blvd.,Mount Laurel, N.J. 08054-4620 Phone 1-800-OKI-DATA(654-3282) or visit www.okidata.com I have a similar problem with my OKIPAGE 10e. 1 inch wide black line, 2 inches from right hand side of page from top to bottom of 8 1/2 x 11 pages. I also cleaned black dust off green roller. Problem continues. Conclusion: I'm not an expert, but I think your wiping, checking, and cleaning, is a waste of time. I think your problem, and mine, is probably not a hardware problem, although I removed my black toner cartridge out of curiosity and perhaps re-installed it incorrectly. My guess is it's some sort of electronic problem, such as programming error, or software problem.
