There are a few problems with this head which we frequently encounter.
One, the motor get's clogged up and the brushes get stuck in the motor.
The red top circuit breaker fails, and under load, the motor will stop.
Take the 2 wires off of the breaker in the power head, and short them together to find out once you have cleaned out the motor which will be a mess inside.
The belt if worn will not operate the power head if you put your foot on it and see if the brush spins.
The belt is a major problem as well as the replacement of the motor.
The motors are 45.00 CAD and belts 4.00 Cad.
The yoke on the power head also gets clogged and needs cleaned out.
Try these procedures and I hope all works out for you!
The 4 main problems we see is #1 The Plug needs replaced due to lack of continuity and #2, the 2 pole 2 throw on off switch has failed on the 120 V motor side of the switch.
One side of the switch is for the main motor and the other is for the power to the power head socket on the vacuum it self.
The 3rd is the motor brushes are seized due to a dirty motor or 4, the motor's armature is blown
Check the continuity of the 120 V cord first, then proceed onward.
Check the beater bar bearing. try rolling them with you finger. They may be locked up or bad if they don't roll easy. You can do the same thing on motor. try rolling the stem coming from the motor (the prt the belt goes on) with your finger. If it is not smooth or makes alot of noise, it may be going out.
You must flip the Tri Star upside down to reveal hidden body screws. Generally 2 at back near the wheels and one at front below the cord retainer. Once removed the body will separate at the bumper. Before removing the motor , note the position of the carbon brushes relative to the body housing. They will be offset allowing the housing to close without striking the motor. This is a metal vac body, your connects must be clean and should be taped after using twist terminals as a precaution. Your cord will go first to the switch, then power runs from the switch to one side each of the power head and motor, then from the opposite power head and motor lead back to the switch. You should secure a knot inside the body of the vac as a strain relief so the cord cannot slip out after connecting
hope you have checked the obvious first ..the plug are all the conections tight including the fuse? if so check the vac's switch for loose conections .lets face it the mains feeds the switch the switch feeds the motor unless you have a speed switch. sounds like a fault that could be cured with a bit of investigation good luck farr64
Circuit brealer switch may be bad, but the fact that Rainbow nozzle made this strange sound makes me think that it may have happened because there is something wrong with the motor.
While unplugged - remove the brush and belt. Try turning brush ends - see if they yurn easily... Try turning the motor shaft - see if it turns and if it does - if it turns smoothly and if makes any strange sounds...
To really test the motor you can just bypass the circuit breaker switch.
Hi Thanks for the info I will ring them after the weekend Cheers Bernie
