It stopped working and the lens won't retract, no power, even with no batteries. I have opened it and cleaned the battery contacts and nothing.
You think the lens got stuck. Don't use force, but try if the lens will move a little when pulled or pushed. Take care, there are gears on the lens and if the motor does not work, you will definitely damage some gears. You need power in the camera, to let the motor retract the lens.
If nothing works, you should go to your dealer, or contact Fuji.
I sometimes read you could try slamming your hand where the camera sits in, while switched on, but if you don't know enough about how everything works in your camera, don't do this. Because you end up with a camera that can't be repaired.
Testimonial: "Thank you for your time. I can't tell what is going on with the camera, since I took it apart and with batteries on it started moving the lens but the lcd kept off. Maybe it is going to the recycling facility in a near future."

I posted a problem, and have found a partial solution, at least if you get the error while shooting. After cycling power to clear the error, try lowering your ISO setting - it may need to be lowered a bunch, so keep trying. Mine cleared up when I went from ISO-800 to ISO-200. My testing is limited, so this may be only a partial fix.
Speculation (based on working with electronic sensor arrays): I believe the camera is indeed trying to protect the sensor. ISO basically sets the sensitivity of the sensor to light. The camera probably calculates the expected sensor signal before each shot, regardless of mode. Sensor signal is a function of ISO (sensitivity), shutter speed (integration time), aperture, and light input. It has influence over shutter and aperture, but none over ISO. It likely gets to a point where it can't solve the equation, so shuts down and gives an error, as user-error is not the only reason it could fail to solve the equation. Going to M would likely exacerbate the problem. I hope this helps.

The lens would have to be repaired or replaced. You'd be looking at a $95-$125 repair
