UNREGISTERED means the phone has not yet been set up to work with any particular base. I don't have any Phillips phones, so I can't tell you the procedure, but it should be outlined in the owners manual. Look for registering your handsets.

Make sure no phone is on the base. Bring unregistered phone to the base. Find the handset locater button. Press menu > advanced set > registration > base 1. When it requests a pin enter your pin 0000 BUT DO NOT HIT MENU YET. Hold the handset locator button ON THE BASE for 5 sec. then press MENU on the phone. It should register.

SOLUTION:

1. First, remove the battery cover on your unregistered TCX905 and look under the battery to confirm that you indeed purchased a TCX905 because some Uniden handsets were packaged as 905's but were not.

2. Take the fully charged unregistered 905 to the base unit TRU9496.

3. On the TRU 9496 base unit press "Menu" then select "Registration" and press OK

4. You should get the message "press the # key on the remote handset".

5. Depress the "#" key on the unregistered 905 and it should register.

IF YOUR HANDSET WAS WORKING AND THEN STOPPED WITH "UNREGISTERED":
If lowercase unregistered is in main display and a reg. appears under the left soft key:
Press the left soft key below REG. and then press and HOLD the button on the top of the base station until the two indicator lights on top of the base station turn off. Wait until handset signals with beeps and registered. You are done

THIS IS FOR FRESH OUT OF THE BOX REGISTRATION OF UNREGISTERED HANDSET
Press REG Register shall be highlighted.
Scroll to Register. Press Select.
Enter the system PIN (Default: 0000). Use
CLEAR to correct typing errors.
Press ENTER to confirm.
• Your handset starts searching for the base.
Press and HOLD the round button on top of the base unit until the two
indications turn off.
• If registration is successful, the signal icon

Some tricks from a helpful Uniden rep:

holding down end+# keys at the same time on the phone for about 10 secs (you will hear a beep) will deregister the handset. If you have a dead handset and want to deregister it from the base, you have to reset the base. unplug the phoneline and power. hold down the "delete message" key, plug power back in. about 10 secs later, you will hear a long beep (theres a short beep upon powerup as well). At this point all handsets are deregistred and you will have to reregister them with the end+# trick. this way when #1 handset is dead, you can make a working one #1 and get the broken one fixed

BTW, this is a woot warranty, not uniden warranty. however the uniden rep gave me the number to the people who refurb (rox0rz!) these. I'll post an update when I finally get ahold of them (and the number if its actually helpful)

The manual says that to register it needs to be completely powered off and then restarted. I unplugged my battery and then plugged it bacdk up.

You can unregister your phone without being in the cradle, but to re-register them, just put them back in the cradle.  After being unregistered, they will automatically re-register once they are put back in the cradle of the main base.  Try setting them back in the base cradle to re-register, and hopefully that will work for you.
