Fatal error on Inspirion Dell. Can't get it to boot at all now.

I tried booting from a McAfee disk thinking it would solve the problem. I am unable to get anything but a blue screen with a message about a fatal error. Yikes! Any suggestions? The system did not come with any backup system disks.

I am at a different machine now in a different building so the code is from my weak memory. It was something like 0xc000005. Does that help?

  • crgoldner Apr 29, 2009

I remember it had a bunch of 000000 and ended in a 5.

I need the hex codes from the blue screen. Then I can help you. Should be something like 0x00000ce or similar, then in parenthesis for more of those codes. Copy them, post it, and I'll tell you what's going on.

Have you tried the factory restore? This is straight from Dell. I have used this on my Win 7 many times and it does work fine. this is for all versions Windows after XP.

Restore the computer's software to original condition.

  1. Turn on the computer.
  2. As the computer starts, press < F8 > on the keyboard until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears on the screen. You must press before the Windows logo appears on the screen. If you press after the Windows logo appears on the screen, the Advanced Boot Options menu will not appear on the screen. If you do not see the Advanced Boot Options menu, restart the computer, and then repeat this step until you see the menu on the screen.
  3. Press the < Down Arrow > on the keyboard to select Repair Your Computer on the Advanced Boot Options menu, and then press < Enter >.
  4. Specify the language settings that you want, and then click Next.
  5. Log in as a user who has administrative credentials, and then click OK.
  6. Click Dell Factory Image Restore.
  7. In the Dell Factory Image Restore window, click Next.
  8. Click to select the Yes, reformat hard drive and restore system software to factory condition check box.
  9. Click Next. The computer is restored to the default factory configuration.
  10. When the restore operation is completed, click Finish to restart the computer. The software is now installed as it was when the computer was first received.
Here's the actual link you can read through.

try this, while the computer is off, press and hold the Fn key down then press the power button like turning it on.. it should say diagnostics boot selected. if it passes the test windows would have to be reinstalled. if it fails with error codes 0141, 0142, 0143 or 0146 then the hard drive has to be replaced.

Windows 98 on dell inspirion d600 install problem

Installing Windows 98, is you need a start-up disk (floppy disk) first before you can use the Windows 98 cd. The start-up disk will perform the partitioning and formatting of the HD...doing this, you have to boot from floppy drive first---after partitioning and formatting, you have change again the boot sequence to boot from cd then you can start the installation of Windows 98.

When i start up my dell inspirion 6000 laptop the logo comes up and then screen goes black

When you see the Dell logo, it means the system is booting and you see the splash screen that is generated on the motherboard.
Apparently this is where it is stopping.
Here's what I would do: First when you boot the computer, press F12 to get the boot options. Choose the diagnostics and run the system diagnostics.
You can also try to press F8 to get the computer into safe mode, but I'm thinking if you see nothing other than the splash screen, that may not work. If you are presented with Windows boot options, choose safe mode and do a system restore.
The last thing you can do if you have the Dell system recovery disk is try to do a repair from that CD if it allows you to do so.

Dell inspirion 530 Black sreen at boot up with blinking cursor

HI there.
Hit F12 - enter diagnostics - then run them
It should from memory run a test called 'DST' which stands for disk short test. If this passes OK your disk is 99% ok. If OK then (my guess is you have WinXP) boot the XP install disk and attemp to install Windows. If the installer detects a version of windows already on the disk it will ask you "if you wish to repair the copy already installed"
If it does hit yes - ( you wont lose your data however I hope you have backed up)
After it has finished your done.
Hope this helps you out.....Mark

Dell b130 internal system restoration failed

Incase you don't have any thing important on the computer try a factory restore. This will wipe out everthing and make the cmputer like new. To start it power off the laptop. Power it on and hold down ctrl and tap f11 severl times at the Dell logo screen. Try this q couple of times as it may not work the first time. If this does nothing you'll need the os cd (xp cd) tO repair or reinstall windows.

UNABLE TO BOOT DELL D600 - FAILURE TO DETECT HARD DISK

If you press F12 during bootup, you should get the boot menu. Run the hard disk diagnostic. If the hard disk is bad, you will get a DST Short Test Error code.

Replacing the hard disk in a D600 is a piece of cake though so if you need a new HD, it's easy to do. The tedious work will come afterward.
