It shakes when off balance. Your wash load may be balanced but the drum may not be. This could be down to the drum bearing or the "spider" that holds the drum in place. If one of the arms is broken it will spin off balance.

If the drum spin noise is loud your bearings need replacing.
If the bowl(drum)goes out of balance with nothing in it your bowl needs to be replaced.

This is normal. There is a balance ring filled with water attached to the inner drum. The balance ring is sealed and is not supposed to be empty. When you turn the inner drum by hand, you're hearing the water settling down from the now upper chambers of the balance ring.

there is a felt liner that is on the front of the drum it can be reglued with hi temp glue from a hardware store. and there are at least two wheels that the drum runs on they are on the bottom front of the drum that balances the drum. good luck

Samsung and LG both use this dynamic balance system that balances the load while it is in motion. They also use a vibration sensing system to modify the time and speed of the spin cycles to minimize any vibration that might still be present. LG has this available on only their upper level models while Samsung's VRT is available on most all models. I believe that both of these manufacturer's are available from Sears.

To start ensure that machine is well balanced, and that the load is well distributed inside the drum.

If the problem is not balancing, then the most common is a broken drum bearing spider or a bad drum bearing. A symptom of drum bearing problems is the drum having excessive play when you spin by hand.
