I have a 96 geo metro that is making a grinding noise while in idle and while in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear. I push the clutch in and sometimes it stops. Its pretty loud.

Sounds like the throw out bearing going bad. This requires the transmission to be removed to be able to replace the defective part you may also want to replace the clutch , pressure plate and pilot bearing while the transmission is removed it will save you a head ache in the long run.

your best bet is to get a tranny from an auto wrecker, and replace the clutch while you're at it. If the tranny is that problematic, it's not worth fixing. The clutch kit, which includes the disc, release bearing, and pressure plate, would be under $150, and a used tranny probably $100. Try and find one with reasonably low mileage. Good luck.

What?! Really! The noise goes when the clutch pedal is depressed! So the noise goes when the release bearing (throw-out bearing) is engage? So how would that be a release bearing/clutch problem? If it didn't make a noise until the clutch pedal was depressed, it would be the release bearing! In other words its the input shaft bearing and/or counter shaft bearing in the gearbox. Stop giving people bad advice

Sounds like the clutch just needs adjusting after replacing its hydraulic system.

Grinding gears from 1st to 2nd, 3rd to 5 ok

Either your clutch is getting bad, or you're shifting down too soon, and up too late. Try double clutching. Push in your clutch and push it into neutral. Release the clutch, fan the gas pedal, push the clutch again and shift into 1st. All this does is sychronize the speed of the transmission with the speed of the engine. There were, in the 60's, a lot of cars with the old "three on the tree" that you had to do this every time, and you get pretty good at it after a while.

1996 Geo Metro Clutch won't disengage

Hi,

In all likelihood two (2) possibilities:

defective clutch cable (most likely); and/or
defective clutch fork (least likely).

Should it be the cable, this might be of help. It is turns out to be the fork, you might need the services of a qualified professional or a dealership.
