I have a very puzzling problem with my laptop. The computer will sometimes completely freeze. No hard drive activity, no mouse response, nothing. This bug is platform independant. It occurs in Windows XP as well as a linux invironenment that I boot into via flash drive. The only way to unfreeze it and continueworking is to apply pressure either on the keyboard or on the left or right corners closest to user in front of the keyboard. I have removed the keyboard and tightened up all screws that were accessible. I have also removed the hard drive and blown off the connectors with dustoff. Another unusual bug that has arrisen with the freezing bug is that my laptop will accept drives connected via USB for a little while, but then disconnect them. After this disconnection happens, windows will give me a notice that the usb device could not be recognized and is likely to have malfunctioned. All of these drives work fine on other machines, so I know this is not the case. Has anyone else had this issue? Any solutions? I'm extremely tight on money at the moment, so a new laptop or even a new MB is not an option. I can only hope it's a simple fix! Thanks All --"

SOURCE: IBM Thinkpad T43 freezes until pressure is applied to the top

I don't have a solution to this problem but I know what the issue is because I have bought several of these unit and they all have one of two problems. 1 If they have the ATI X300 Radeon video then it is a GPU issue that has plague the T4x series and I believe it migrated into the T60 as well this is a very disturbing issue in the sense that IBM/Lenovo has known about this problem and won't take ownership and have a recall. The cost of these machine's are unbelievable when new and to have a problem like this it is unacceptable. The other issue is the Southbridge and it has the same problem as the GPU, which is a solder problem. The solder joints between the board and the BGA become cracked and cause intermittent issues such as freezing, HDD not to spin ETC practically everything runs through the Southbridge (PCI controller) even video control signals and USB. The cause is flexing of the motherboard over time Solution 1. Find a place that does this type of rework there are some companies offering this service but do your homework before hand I am in the process of getting one of these boards done but the cost is not cheap. I think it is cheaper then getting a new motherboard Solution 2 Get a new motherboard $400.00 and after three or four years have the same problem. I hope this helps. Dee

Hp pavillion m7680n win xp freezes

The problem seems to be with RAM. Remove your RAM after switching the PC off and clean the contacts array carefully with a dry cloth, rub a little if required with a slightly coarse cloth. Put it back, hopefully will solve your problem.

There was appx. 55 min. of battery left and I only needed to set up my windows live messenger acct. I turned the laptop on, waited for it to boot . While it never completely booted up, it did do a Norton...

At least you have a backup in there, somewhere!

Laptops are very stable normally but don't boot up if there is a device in the USB slot or a CD/DVD in the drive or sometimes when the battery gets to s critical level.
If it still refuses to POST, remove the AC Adapter, remove the battery and remove the hard drive.
Power the unit up without the hard drive and it should complete POST and complain that there is no hard drive. If that doesn't work remove AC adapter, ensure battery is disconnected and remove hard drive and RAM. Try again. If it still doesn't work, you have a mother board fault and it needs a service centre. www.Toshiba.com will help you out.
If it does work at one of the options, when you have closed the laptop down, replace the RAM first and test, then the Hard Drive.
Hope this fixes your problem.

Mouse won't install

You may need to check your BIOS setting. The mouse be disabled there. You can access the BIOS thru the boot menu when your computer frist starts up. If the mouse is active as a usable feature, then you may have to a hard boot of your operating system with the OS(Windows Vista, XP, 2000, etc.) Cd you recieved with the computer. If that does not work, then you will have to a complete reinstall of your operating system.

Keyboard is retarded

Do you have a USB disk, or more than one USB disk, competing for USB bandwidth? I get problems with my USB mouse when there's too much other activity on the USB hub.

Also, do you have up-to-date drivers for all your USB devices?

T30 with XP hangs and freezes intermittenly during usage...

There's a chance it's still the memory slots. You know, they are located directly beneath the hard drive.
Just a thought.
