Route calculation error

I have a detailed map of New Zealand on the gps when I select a route and go to follow road option it comes up with route calculation error no road near start point. If I use a saved tracback and go to follow road option it brings up route calculation error aswell. It will follow the tracback way and tell you when a turn is coming up but only because it has the track already saved. I thought I had it set up right but possible not. Any thoughts. As

My Garmin 60CSx has the same problem with the "Route Calculation Error". I wondered if my map wouldn't support routing, so I tried it on a 60CSx of a colleague and - it worked. However, his map also doesn't work on my GPS unit.:-( The only difference between the two units is that my one is an American one in contrast to his European. Maybe there exist different versions of (older/newer) Garmin 60 CSx units??

I was having the same problem and contacted Garmin support.

What I had done was turned off the Basemap that came with the unit. I only had the mapsource map street map on which I had purchased separately.

The technician basically said the unit needed the basemap to "locate itself". Somehow the basemap supports any maps you purchase separately. That seemed odd but once I turned the Basemap back on it calculated the routes and the error message went away.

If you have the Basemap off, try turning it on from the Map Setup - Information window.

Hope this helped.

This is a follow up to my previous post. I had another conversation with Garmin Tech support and got a slightly differnt answer than from the first person I spoke with.

It is incorrect that the Basemap needs to be turned on so that other mapping programs would work.

Turning on your basemap should take care of the "route calculation error" because your gps will now use the basemap to autocalculate your route.

What I was also told was that the gps will autocalculate roads using the Basemap or City Navigator software. The gps will not autonavigate if you are using Metroguide software. Autorouting is not supported in the gps with Metroguide. (It states this on the software case)

The computer will autocalculate routes using Metroguide (which I have) and City Navigator (which I don't have) and the Basemap.

The technician said that to improve the chances for your computer generated route to be the same as the gps generated route you should use the same mapping software (Basemap or City Navigator) and use the same options (quickest route, follow road, etc)

    Hopes this clarified things.

Try connecting it to your computer via a USB cable. Then log on to Garmin's webiste and download a map update. Then you can put the map update on your GPS to replace the ones you lost. All Garmin customers get one free map update. After than it's about $40-$60 dollars for an update.

Route problem

If you don't have "Detailed Maps" for the area you are travelling in, it will not have adequate map detail to create routes that are not on major highways.

To remedy this, you will need to use another of GARMIN's products... I believe it's called Mapsource City Navigator, and will have to be purchased for the area you are concerned with. This PC software will then allow you to load additional Map Data onto an SD card, which will slip into the slot on the left side of the unit.

You can find out about it at their website www.garmin.com then look in Maps
