this is the sign of a damaged or dead battery pack. they can be rebuilt at Batteries Plus or replaced. I would also try alkaline batteries in the radio before spending money on new battery packs. Most rechargeable battery packs must be kept charged regularly, and should be fully discharged before recharging, or they will be damaged and end up with a limited lifespan. IF you are handy with a multimeter you can check to see that the charger is putting voltage out by placing the probes on the contacts while it is plugged in. especially if the cord is twisted or looks stretched, but generally it is the battery not the charger.

THEY SHOULD ALL WORK TOGETHER ON THE FRS FREQUENCIES. MAKE SURE THAT YOU SET THE CHANNELS AND SUBCHANNELS TO THE SAME ON ALL FRS RADIO.

It looks like some of these came with alkaline battery backs, some with rechargeables, and some with no batteries. The rechargeable packs will be marked "NiMH" with the part number FA-BD on them. If yours are the rechargeable types they probably need to be replaced. You can also power the units with 4 AAA alkaline batteries.

It is likely the mic set you are using is not made for the SX700 radio, and is drawing too much power from the radio. Some audio accessories draw more power than others. It is possible your mic set is intended for a professional model radio which would supply more power to the device. You should check with Motorola to see if they have a mic set similar to go with your SX700 radio. the cobras are meant to work with alkaline cells. You bought nicads which are a lower voltage per cell (1.2 to 1.38). Alkalines are about 1.55-1.58

That is why your rechargeables only show a quarter charge, because their terminal voltage is lower and the radio thinks they are not fully-charged.

Are you sure that the batteries are running well?
Try using alkaline batteries just for testing.

I have the Cobra Microtalk 4100 FRS radios with charging base. After changing the batteries with new nimh rechargables the charge light would not illuminate and the unit would not charge. I noticed the original batteries had a metal band around one end. This band makes a small connection inside the battery compartment on the first battery. Seems to be a cheap way to ensure you dont try to recharge the unit with non-rechargable batteries installed. I rapped a small piece of tinfoil around one end of the first battery in the new set then popped it back in and now they will charge correctly again. Dont try this with non-rechargable batteries! I would recomend buying original replacement batteries.

I'm still looking for the manual (?).. it's more of a pamplet as I recall.

If you can't find the right adapter, you can probably get one of the universal adapters that will work.
