I've had a JVC HR-S3901/3911U VCR for a few years now and have had no problems, but last week, I went to rewind a tape (without the video playing), and when it went to go into the high rewind speed, it made a horrible grinding/clicking sound, and then went down to the slow rewind speed so that it takes almost 10 minutes to rewind an hour of tape. I thought it was the tape, but I tried three different tapes, and the same thing happened.
It plays and records fine, and rewinds and FF in the slow speed without problems.
Tonight, I took it apart, and saw that the same thing happens on fast-forward too, except the tape reels don't move at all, and then it makes the loud noise and the machine shuts itself off.
I couldn't figure out what the problem is. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm sure this could turn into a bigger problem if it's not fixed.
Thanks!
I have this same problem where the machine makes loud noises in the fast rewind mode. I took it apart and found a spring loose in the bottom of the machine. Does anyone know where it goes? The spring is shaped like a V. Coil with one straight leg and one with a 90 degree bend at the end.
Thanks, David Long

You may have an idler gear wheel which has been damaged- perhaps broken/worn gear teeth or something afoul in it's drive mechanisms. Check this idler which sits down in between the supply and take-up spindles. You should be able to see this with no tape loaded.
This idler should also move freely from supply to takeup- if it is sticky in movement this could be the problem.
If your idler is broken, you may be able to replace it. Check with a service center- or a parts supplier. MCM electronics is one such supplier- there are others.

Hi
I do not know of any vcr that will do this. The timer can be set to record on each day of the week but will not rewind when the tape comes to the end there may be some cctv videos that might do this sorry I donot know Make or Mod No

ADCON4035:: Whenever I had the problem with the "noisy spindles", I just find an old movie, damaged tape, etc but with a good [chassie] body. sometimes the spindles have too much leayway and flip-flop around. It may take more then one 'body' change, but it stops the noise when you find the right size.
The take up is not rewinding the tape all the way back into the shell. Check the idler, it's either worn or if it's plastic it is warped from the heat.
I was wondering if you tryed unplugging vcr for an hour then
plugging it back up. sometimes this resits it and it will work fine.
the tape might eject itself out or eject button might work.
Does the machine play tapes well? Clear steady picture and all? No tracking bars? wavering sound?
Tape chewing is generally a problem with a bad Capstan Pinch Roller, Associated symptoms are as above.
Please do recheck or confirm if any of the above problems are also present.
