When defrosting, what causes loud banging noises?

Hello David;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

The noise is coming from one of two places.

1.) Freezer Fan - The fan may be hitting ice. After defrosting the noise will disappear.
2.) Compressor Flapper Valves - Remove the cover to expose the compressor. Plug the unit back in. If the compressor starts jumping unplug the unit. Check the rubber bushings where the compressor is bolted down. Are the bolts loose? Is the rubber torn off? If the compressor is secure, then you have a bad compressor.

My chest style freezer will not cool. This unit operated without issue for several years. We moved to a new house and did not want/need to use the unit for a year or so. When I plug it in I can hear a...

its the ptc overload relay on the side of the compressor body,it aids in starting the compressor by momentarily putting your start and run windings in parallel to overcome" locked rotor current",then drops out start windings after unit has come up to operating speed,it also protects the windings if the compressor cant start, they simply unplug off the compressor and the replacement plugs in the same, replace the capacitor connected to this if applicable as this protects the ptc's overload relay contacts

Picked up used chest freezer...plugged in and briefly clicks...I can hear it energized for about 5 seconds then quits....it then repeats this cycle. It was on its side when delivered

Try to replace the compressor relay (most of the times problem) ,but if still doing the same clicking noise , the problem is in the compressor.

LOAD CLICKING SOUND WHEN PLUGED IN TO ELECTRIC

did you just get the freezer or move it recently? this unit doesnt have any fans so I'm thinking the compressor is somehow out of place and when you plug it in the compressor is hitting its steel shell from the inside. remove the compartment cover on the side then plug the freezer in and see if the compressor is making the noise..

Kenmore freezer quit working after power outage

simple stuff, you have a compressor a stat and power. check the receptacle to be sure you have 120 volts . then check the compressor with stat at max cold setting to see if you have 120 volts at compressor. if you do then compresssor is bad =new compressor or new unit. if no power to compressor then stat is bad= new stat. i always recomend new unit cause new stat or compressor wont fix a freon leak.... i have replaced a few compressors that died soon after due to a freon leak. good luck...

13 months old Kenmore compressor very hot.

lacdoi,
huuum At your service!

You said,
The warranty just ran out, Sears came out told me needs a control board ($210 for just labor to replace) not sure about part price. I though a new freezer is about twice his labor and parts, so I sent him away minus $65.
I did some troubleshooting today, pull the plug for 2 days. Plug it in, temp alarm goes on all the time. Turn alarm off, left the freezer running for 4hrs.
Not cold at all, some cool air. Fan is on, compressor is on (can hear humming noise and is vibrating). Compressor is very hot to the touch, could burn finger.
Should I call Sears again, wonder how much to fix all the problem? Or just give up, look for another brand new one (not Kenmore).

MY ADVICE:
Sounds like a big repair bill and multiple problems

How old is the appliance?

If the appliance is 10 years old or more you may not be advisable to put good money into bad!
New appliance are so much more efficient today that they can save you a lot of money in energy!!!!
Replace it.

You will be fine

Bless You huuum

Changing Freezers

If your products are already in the frozen state the answer is yes, you can make an immediate transfer. Normally a couple of hours run to allow the temperatures to stabilize is sufficient. The cool down run time also insures the the unit is functioning properly. If you plug it in and transfer the products right away make frequent checks to insure proper operation.

Frigidaire freezer quits running

actionsnax please remove the freezer from the GFCI. What is happening on this old unit is that if the compressor shuts off then tries to come back on before the pressure in the system equalizes, the compressor can pull 12 amps. This is normally higher than the trip point of the GFCI. I had this happen years ago with a brand new Amana SXS refrig, in that case no one knew the unit was on a GFCI. The manufactures require that this units not be on a GFCI.
Hope this helps
