I experienced the same problem last week with my freezer. Apparently the change in temperature during defrosting allows the blade locking mechanism to slide on the motor shaft during the spinning operation. The blade pulls itself along the shaft until it comes in contact with the motor mounting bolt. If your freezer just stops getting super cold, but remains cool and you don't hear the fan spinning, remove the inside back panel and check the fan blades for freedom of movement. I almost disposed of the freezer this past week but decided to make one last check of the mechanisms.

Hi , yes it could be the thermostat but more likely the defrost timer , most parts are replaceable with generic ones , your local refrigeration supplier may be able to assist you with the right selection simply by giving him the model and brand , these parts will not cost more than $100 bucks . if you are competent in checking please follow this simple test.
first turn off the fridge and get to the back of it ,
remove the covers and get a good torch to see underneath where the compressor and other components are , now there should be a black object (compressor) with two pipes coming out of it (if there are to small pipes coming out of the bottom and they run back into a tray on top or next to the compressor they are not the ones ) now turn the fridge back on and wait about 15 minutes feel these two pipes , one should be sort of luke warm and the other should be warm to hot , if this is not the case then the refrigerant has leaked and a tech will need to be called if they are, then the defrost timer is faulty in which case it will be located under the fridge and have a white button perturbing through the back wall down near the compressor , once you find this try turn it a full 360 Deg , if the compressor turns off while this is happening thats ok , keep turning it until it tries to turn on again but wait about five minutes before you turn it again to allow the pressure to settle , if the compressor does not shut down then the defrost timer is definitely shot,
I hope this information helps you.
Have a nice day :)
