SOURCE: Acer travelmate 4650, after bios flashing, no display.thanks.

HI there
Sounds like the bios flash has failed, the only thing you can do now is try to flash again, make sure you have the right bios update for that model machine, suggest you get a USB floppy drive so you are able to re-flash the bios, if it still doesn't work then the machine is rendered useless.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!!

SOURCE: I can't find the cmos battery in my Acer TravelMate 512DX

you have got an older model, try this:

follow the instructions:

you will need:
a slim x-screw-driver
a sharp knife with a slim blade and
a cup or else for the screws, don't loose them!
a new c-mos bios battery model: CR-1220 (exchange it while your in there!)

you find c-mos battery and hdd under the keyboard!

- turn off the power, remove accu and charger cable, for static electricity is friendly fire
to your laptop now !

- open your screen to max. fold (angle of 180 degrees)

- look for removable plastic part near to left holder of screen
- carefully remove it
- also remove plastic panel right to it in the section between display holders
metal should be visible now
- carefully! remove keyboard, starting at the left side, continuing topside
as you won't be able to fully remove it, simply turn it over
- unscrew any screws holding the metal plate, remove it
- now you see: left the CPU plus cooler, top right middle the hdd still in an adapter attached
to the mainboard, at it's lower right the C-MOS battery (g
- turn loos these screws
- carefully remove the frame/adaptor holding the hdd
- unscrew again the adaptor
- seperate hd fram adaptor

... and gotcha!

be careful to get a proper notebook hd (samsung or such)
exchange CMOS-battery by chance
reattach new hd to frame, again carefully!

to reassamble: rewind the procedures
put everything back in place

replug, pray and turn on the lappie.

wish you luck.....

Testimonial: "Thanks for all of the information. The keyboard was destroyd during the removal process so we bought a new one instead."

How do I replace the cmos battery

http://www.tim.id.au/blog/tims-laptop-service-manuals/#toc-acer

Drop down to the 'paragraph' that starts with - Travelmate 200.
(200 in Blue)
Go down to the 7th line (5730 in Blue), scroll across, and click on -
6493 in Blue.

This is a PDF file. The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.
After you click on the file name (6493) it may take up to 30 seconds, before the first page comes up.
The file is downloading in the background.

The CMOS Battery, or also known as the RTC Battery, (Real Time Clock), is on the BOTTOM of the motherboard.

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/For-acer-TravelMate-6492-6492G-notebook-motherboard-MBTLN0B001-Tested-ree-Shipping/555541838.html

Scroll down a little to the two Large views of the motherboard;
1) The first view shown is the Bottom side of the motherboard.
Has the blue -
For Acer Travelmate 6942 6942G notebook motherboard MBTLN0B001 and tested+ree, above it.

Yes. TravelMate 6492, not TravelMate 6493. The RTC Battery is still in the same place.

Above the pink processor socket......see the Yellow round object?
It actually has wires coming from it, that end in a small white connector.
Not the same color, not the same series, but gives you a better look at this type of RTC Battery setup,

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ACER-TRAVELMATE-6292-SERIES-6292-812G25Mn-CMOS-BIOS-BATTERY-/230795196555?pt=UK_Computing_Other_Computing_Networking&hash=item35bc77388b

There is a little round watch type battery in that Yellow, and that Black plastic 'bag'.

Losing date, and time? Replace CMOS/RTC Battery.
Need to reset, or wipe out a BIOS password, or HDD password?
(HarDDrive)
Not THAT way.

Go to Page 53. (Adobe Reader page number box at top)

Page 168 - Bottom View of motherboard - Number 13 in the chart -
CLRP2 - CMOS clear
(Clear CMOS jumper)

Instructions on Page 169

The Service Manual doesn't show the location of the CMOS battery.
DOES state it in Troubleshooting / Random Loss of BIOS Settings Page 148 at the Bottom.

Just an average laptop disassembly video I found. Skip to 3:40 or so to start.
You SHOULD wear an ESD wrist strap, and have it's aligator clip attached to a good ground source.
He is AT least working on a wood table top.

Perhaps some of these Acer pictorial guides will also help,

Could I be wrong about the CMOS Battery location?

Moi?

Yes.

Look down in the Battery Compartment for the CMOS Battery, or in a small hidden panel down in the Battery Compartment.
Also look on the top of the motherboard, once the Palm Rest Cover (Top Cover) is removed.

How can I reset the system boot password on my Acer Travelmate 6492

Here's the deal. Officially, Acer won't provide you with ANY information on how to reset this password. They only will tell you that if you send them $100 and the laptop that THEY will clear it for you. Here's an email excerpt that I found online in reference to this:
"Thank you for contacting Acer America. I apologize for the delay in responding to your inquiry. In order to have the BIOS or hard disk password removed (This include any biometric security), the notebook will need to come in to our repair depot for password removal. This service is not covered by warranty and unfortunately there is no other recourse to remove a BIOS or HDD password from the notebook. The flat fee for BIOS password removal is $100.00 US dollars plus tax. If it is a BIOS or HDD password and you would like us to service it for you, please contact our telephone technical support line at 1-800-816-2237. Hours of operation are 7am-9pm CST Monday-Friday and 8am-5pm CST Saturday and Sunday, excluding holidays."
That being said, in most cases (and I've found several articles that confirm this), if you remove all power from the laptop (A/C power, main battery AND the CMOS battery) for approx 30-45 minutes, that this will wipe the BIOS completely and then you can get back into it. Getting to the CMOS (bios) battery requires partially tearing down the laptop which, while not rocket science, can be a bit complex. If you decide to do this, here is a link to a complete service manual that will walk you through the process (http://www.intellcity.ru/content-2/service-manual-notebook-Acer/service-manual-Acer-TravelMate-6492.pdf).
I hope this response helps you out.
I wish you the very best of luck! If I can help you further, please let me know.
I strive for '4 Thumbs Up'! If I've assisted you, I'd greatly appreciate you taking the time to provide me with a favorable rating. Thanks so much!
