Our heater and fan work, but our AC unit is not activating and we're not sure how to turn it on. All breakers are on and untripped and the thermostat is set to "Cool" and adjusted low enough to trigger the fan to begin operating. The unit was tested in September, but our utility company installed a new thermostat in February 2009.
This is typical wiring for a 4 wire thermostat
R = Red One Side of 24 volt Transformer
G = Green Blower relay
Y = Yellow Cool Condensing unit
W = White Heat Furnace

Thermostat has yellow wire to Y terminal, furnace has yellow and red wires go to the Y terminal.
We do not see a small two wire going into the unit. There is a large insulated wire going from the outside breaker (mounted on the foundation wall) to the unit.
Hmmm. We haven't done anything at all except disconnect the thermostat to look at the wires as you requested, but the air conditioning unit is on and running now. Could the thermostat power being reset have done something? We are happy to have the cool air now, but would like to know if the thermostat could have been the trigger for future problem solving. Any ideas of what may have happened?
Thank you for the help!
I am at a loss you might have moved some wires on the t-stat since you did remove some wire or wires. But I feel you are golden now and no more problems. Way to go pat your self on the back for me okay. take care ken
Okay it is wired correctly. Go outside and make sure the small two wire is going inside the unit. And not broke anywhere. Sometimes a home owner runs a weed eater into the two wire and don't even know it. Not to say you would do anything like that but have to eliminate simple problems to narrow down the source.
Take off the cover to the thermostat and tell me what color wires are going to the Y terminal. Then go to where ever the furnace is and tell me what color wires are going to the Y terminal on the furnace side.
