If you have a standing pilot and it is not on, you should be smelling gas in the house.
Try lighting it with a BBq lighter directly.
On some stoves, you will have to press a button and hold that button for some time ..over a minute..while you have the light to the middle of the pilot.
Do not proceed to light the pilot until there is no more smell of gas in the oven.

How do you light your pilot light on an kenmore oven

To light the pilot light on a Kenmore Maxitrol oven, please follow these steps:
  1. Locate the pilot light assembly. It's usually at the bottom of the oven, behind a small metal cover.
  2. Turn the oven control knob to the "off" position.
  3. Remove the metal cover by pulling it out or lifting it up, depending on the model.
  4. Locate the pilot light and the pilot light valve. The valve is usually a small red button located near the pilot light.
  5. Press and hold the pilot light valve in for a few seconds while you use a long match or lighter to light the pilot light.
  6. Once the pilot light is lit, continue holding the pilot light valve in for another 30 seconds.
  7. Release the pilot light valve and make sure the pilot light stays lit. If it doesn't, repeat the process.
  8. Replace the metal cover and turn the oven control knob to the desired temperature setting.
Note: If you're having trouble lighting the pilot light or keeping it lit, it may be best

When i turn on oven all i smell is gas i cleaned with a wire brush still nothing. also is the pilot light always have to be on and can you see it when oven is off

Most gas ovens that aren't electronic ignition usually have a pilot light.
Usually one in the oven area and one for each burner. (Sometimes shared between two burners.)
These pilot lights must lit at all times...otherwise it won't light up and you'll smell gas.
Usually the pilot light is in the very back of the oven and can be seen with the broiler drawer opened.

There is a small set screw located at the pilot light assembly in the oven and also at every burner.
This allows you to adjust pilot light up or down, thereby letting you set pilot light flame to a level that doesn't get blown out by a draft...or you can turn it off completely.

If you use that set screw to turn off the pilot light gas, you'd need to strike a match to light the oven or burners everytime you needed them.

Sounds like your thermocoupler is bad, its like your automatic pilot light, easy to fix. I have done 2 of them myself, on General Electric gas ranges.

My Gas oven takes long to heat and maintain temp. Also, there is often the smell of gas and a odd sound during the heating.

Faulty THERMOSTAT. Call a repairman to replace. If you attempt to locate and replace it, be sure to turn off all gas from the outside handle. You may have to relight all of your pilot lights, but its better than blowing yourself to the moon!

Oven pilot went out due to power outage. I don't know where the pilot oven light is. where is the pilot light to light the oven?Ge XL44

pilot over lights do not require power to stay light or should it go out in a power outage! do you have to normally light pilot with a match? if not you have a glow coil and its a electronic ignition range and power will affect it. once power is restored you should just be able to turn on over and everything would be ok.if it is a pilot light you need to remove the bottom door stick arm in to back and you'll see the pilot assembly at back if you look up! hopethis helps...

Magic Chef range the pilot on the oven will not light.

Is this a manual lighting pilot,do you light it?

If so you may have a bad gas valve.

If this is an auto light pilot it could be the electronic spark is bad.Im guessing the popping noise is the autospark trying to light.

Stove works just fine/oven does not warm up - pilot light is on, but turning on oven does nothing but make the pilot light glow a little bigger. Oven will not ignite.

Hi, The ignitor is getting weak and will not open the gas valve. Replace the ignitor and you will be back in business. This is a very common problem with the gas ovens.
Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Pilot Light Wont Light

Take off the top cover plate inside the oven. Now with the door open turn the oven on does the hot surface glow? If it doesn't glow then you have a bad igniter and needs to be replaced. What ever you do don't touch the surface of the new igniter human oil will shorten the life of the igniter. now if the hot surface glows then the gas valve is bad and need to be replaced. I'm betting it's the hot surface.

Oven will not light

Most gas ranges currently available employ one of 3 basic gas ignition systems; pilot ignition, hot surface ignition system (which uses a 'glow bar' or 'glow coil' - aka an "ignitor") and a spark ignition system. The latter two being referred to as "electronic ignition" systems as they use electricity in one form or another to operate the oven heating system. Only the pilot ignition system has an actual "pilot" (which is a small but real "flame") which might need manual lighting.

If the surface burners of a range are a spark ignition type, the oven IS one of the possible kinds of electronic ignition systems and thus will not usually have a "pilot" which needs lighting. Be aware though that just because the surface burners might light via a spark doesn't necessarily mean the oven uses the spark type ignition system too. spark-anim1.90x11.gif
There is one older style of electronic ignition system which does also use an oven pilot but it is very rare and such a system hasn't been used in oven models since the early to mid 70's. It is the 'constant pilot' *electronic ignition* system
