I have an Activa 130, have loved it for years! But now I am having tension problems, bobbin thread is bunching up. Rewound the bobbin, rethreaded the machine, twice. It sounds like a choo choo train, thump thump thump. I am an experienced seamstress, meaning having been sewing for over 40 years. I finally splurged and bought this machine several years ago. I use it alot and want to have my wonderful little machine back!!

Hi Bettyme2.
just found this on the web.
Try rethreading the top. A sewing machine repairman told me one time that if the top messes up rethread the bottom and if the bottom messes up rethread the top. Check for lent in the bobbin area too. Don't use canned air but a soft clean brush. Hope this helps.
Is it the bobbin tension that is very loose? Try tightening it. Also check that the bobbin has been installed in the bobbin case, turning the correct direction and that the bobbin tension is threaded properly.
If it is the upper tension that is loose and creating "thread nests" under the fabric, the machine is either misthreaded or possibly the thread is not seated completely in the tension disk.
Remove the upper thread from the machine.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread the upper thread from the beginning--verify the thread path is correct.
Set the upper tension to the midway point between high & low number (the factory standard--although it may need tweaking later for your particular machine).
Retest your machine. Hopefully, the issue has been resolved. If not, it may need service.
You need a fatter needle. The skinny needle will not open the leather enough for a smooth flow of thread and that's why the bobbin is bunching up when the top thread is sticking. Make it easier on your machine by using an appropriate size needle while sewing leather.
Hmmm, does the thread bunch up under the fabric or in the bobbin? Check both your tensions and if that doesn't work it could be that your machine is slightly off time and needs to be adjusted.
Check between the tension disc, sometimes you can get a piece of thread caught in that and it prevents it from tightening down and making a good stitch. Also, make sure that your presser foot is in the up position when you thread your machine.
The impulse is to blame the bobbin, because that's where the thread bunches. But the problem is probably with the top thread tension. The tension is too loose, allowing the bobbin to help itself to all the thread it wants. Retrace the path of the thread from spool to needle and see if you missed anything. The instructions in my VX1005 manual are not clear. I had to try a couple of paths before I got it right. Make sure the spring in the tension disk setup is moving freely. You should feel a fair amount of resistance when you pull on the needle thread. Hope this helps.
