Regulating the length of the stitch: The machine can be adjusted to from six to thirty stitches per inch, as indicated by the numbers on the stitch indicator plate. Changing the length of the stitch is accomplished as follows: Loosen the stitch length stop control (B, Fig. 12) and move it to the bottom of the slot. Move the stitch length lever (A, Fig. 12) to the desired stitch length. Now, move the stop control up until the control plate (visible in the stitch length slot) touches the bottom of the stitch length lever. Tighten the thumb screw (B) with finger pressure only. At this point, the stitch length is "marked," and you can move the lever up to sew in reverse at approximately the same stitch length, and then return it to your desired forward length. The machine needs to go in for a service. Dust packs up on the oil and makes moving parts difficult to function.

If you do not already own the Singer Overcast Foot for your Singer 5511 Scholastic machine, you will need that. Plus, you will need serger needles.

I was hoping to find a video tutorial online for you, but no luck. I did find written instructions with photos regarding using a sewing machine overcast stitch as a serger. This is the link:

Apparently, the Singer 5511 Scholastic isn't a true serger.

The levers and controls may move but are they activating the internal mechanism? Could be the parts have been seized by old, dry oil.

Wheel on right side that controls the needle up and down is very tight...

ok I have looked at a photo of your machine, it looks like it may have the stretch stitch. It is designated on the sewing machine per the instructions in the manual. The stitch is similar to a zigzag with a flat side to it. Check with Youtube for "stretch stitches lycra spandex". that may get you a video to watch.

Your machine is a beginner model with only 8 stitches. Looking at the photo of the machine, it does not appear to have a blanket stitch.
