How cab tell whether the battery or power supply is bad. It's an Inspiron 6000. It died last night. I've removed the battery, tried it, and the same thing happens. Light is on the charger, and as soon as I press the start button, thye power light goes out. I have to unplug AC, and when plugged back in, green light is on again (until I hit the power button, then it dies out again)

Sure, this just mean your are in charging mode, but your battery is at full charge. Should your battery need charging and in charging mode the lights would be green most likely.

The Caps Lock Flashing then going off is a power on self-test code. Here is the Dell troubleshooting guide to the issue.

SOURCE: dell inspiron 5150 do not come on when the power button pressed

If you remove the battery and disconnect power cord, then hold power button for 20 seconds, then reconnect power cord but do not re-insert battery, and the unit powers on okay, the problem may be your battery. If there is still an intermittent problem, the power connector inside the unit may be loose and need re-soldering, or you could have a bad power supply.

SOURCE: Inspiron Battery Light Flashing Orange

Battery.

Dell has a chip internal to the battery programed to shut down after a certain number of charge cycles. This means every time you plug the laptop in with the battery installed. When it reaches this determined number the battery effectively shuts down, even though technically it's still good. There have been loads of complaints on the net toward Dell over this issue. I have myself experience this. Battery good one day, powered down, went home, powered up... only to receive the deadly flashing light. Only cure is to replace battery. Several hacks trying to get around this but they're all horrible. Bad Dell - bad, bad Dell!

SOURCE: Dell Vostro 1000 shut down and won't turn back on

nope, it is your dc power regulator board. you will note this happens if the battery is in or out of the laptop. that is the key test. some regulators are on the main board and some are seperate for this reason. I think the vostro though is on the main board. A little board re-work will resolve this issue after replacing some components, but this is way beyond a home user's ability.. trust me on this. Sorry for the bad news. Thanks!

Battery won?t charge and AC adaptor not recognized

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 that just turned two years old.

After one year, my dell 6-cell battery started to falter, so Ipurchased a new 9-cell battery. This worked fine until a couple ofmonths ago when I noticed that my 65W adaptor was frayed. I bought anew 65W Dell Inspiron 6000 ac adapter andit worked well for about a week until I noticed that my battery wasn’tcharging at times. If I was patient, or unplugged the adapter andplugged it back in, the battery began charging and all was saved.

This lasted only a short time until my Dell Inspiron 6000 batterywouldn’t charge at all for long periods of time, and sometimes thecomputer wouldn’t turn on, even if plugged into the wall. I thought itmight still be the adaptor, so I borrowed a fully functioning 90W Delladapter from a family member to test the system. This worked better, but still not great.

When I removed the battery and started only fromAC power, the functionality was also intermittent. Usually, if thecomputer actually started, I received the start-up error “The Inspiron 6000 AC AdapterType could not be determined, etc. etc. etc.” After pressing F1, thecomputer booted, but if the battery wasn’t in, the computer didn’tusually last long before shutting off. Unsure if maybe the battery wasthe problem, I put the 6-cell Inspiron 6000 batteryback in, and it too wouldn’t charge, although (together with the 90Wadapter) my computer would at least start more consistently if pluggedin. The error remained however, and sometimes the system stopsrecognizing power and switches to my ever dwindling battery power untilthe adapter is recognized again.

The problem is with the jack on the motherboard inside our Inspiron 6000’s. This is the jack you plug your power plug into on the back of the laptop.

Somehow the jack gets worn and does not make correct contact withthe laptop so the Laptop does not see the power supply as a legit Dellbrand. So the powersupply will not charge the laptop battery and run the laptop at the same time.

DC power jack repair guide. Do-it-yourself instructions.

Modern laptops are all sold with built-in wireless laptop ac adapter. Some power notebooks used by corporate road warriors will have powerfulcellular adapters that connect the laptop to the Internet via the cellphone infrastructure

A bad connection between DC-IN power jack on the system board and the system board is a very common problem with dell pa 12,dell e1505 and Dell Inspiron 6000notebooks. If your laptop is out of warranty, then you can fix theproblem by resoldering DC-IN jack on the system board. If it’s stillunder warranty, it would be fixed at no charge to you. Problem symptoms:
93-06070-002_replacement-dell-pa-12.jpg
  • Laptop randomly shuts down without any warning.
  • Power LED and battery charge LED start flickering when you wigglethe power cord or the AC adapter tip on the back or your laptop.
  • The battery will not get charged.
  • When you plug ac adapter for laptop, the laptop appears to be dead and there is no LED * activity at all (DC-IN jack on the system board is broken).
To fix the problem, you have to take your laptop apart, remove the system board to resoleder or replace the DC-IN jack. dell pa 12 and Dell Inspiron 6000 disassembly guides will help you to remove the system board. Take a closer look at the power jack on the system laptop board witha magnifying glass. In most cases you get the power problem because ofa bad connection between the DC jack and the system board, you’ll see acrack between the DC jack connector and the system board.

Dell inspiron 6000 dead when connect power adeptor to laptop the led light on psu goes off is this mother board fault or psu.

If the led on the power supply turns off after connecting it to your laptop, the problem most likely lies with the power supply especially if the machine will run on battery power. This can be tested by

1. Turn the laptop off.

2. Remove the battery and power supply plug.

3. Press and hold the power button for at least 15 seconds to reset the laptop.

4. Replace the power supply plug into the laptop without replacing the battery.

5. If the computer will not start and there are no lights turning on on the laptop the power supply is bad.

6. Replace the battery and attempt to start the machine both with and without the power supply plugged in.

Try to turn Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop and nothing happens. No lights, no sounds, nothing. Power chord is good and has output voltage of 19.5.

remove battery and then insert power cord and power it up. if it powers, then insert battery while laptop is on. otherwise, if it doesnt, get the battery charged from else where and insert it just to confirm that the power supply unit isnt spoilt.

Dell 600m won't power from ac

It could be the charging port is loose or has gone bad outrightly. If it is shaky or has a dry joint, then try scrapping off the solder and resoldering ok. Power down the pc and then to AC supply to see whether it charges. If it does, then you probably have a corrupt operating system and should be re-installed. If the RAM becomes unstable, it could also come with such a problem. Hence, I suggest too that a confirmed working and compatible memory should be tried on your pc. If all failed then your motherboard is bad and should be replaced. Good luck

Dell inspiron 6100 doesn't turn on

It's going to be one of three things, battery, memory, or motherboard. Start by removing the battery and starting on AC only. Then remove the memory and try them one at a time. Still no go, then the problem is with the board, most likely the power management chip. You will need to take it for a professional diagnostic. They will be able to tell you exactly where the problem is and whether it's a replaceable component.
