    ANSWER TO CLARIFICATION REQUEST (BDILLMANN)
The day I couldn´t burn DVD´s anymore I looked ate the burners properties. Region code was OK (4 for Peru).

I´m getting very disappointed of HP´s post sale service (if they have such a strange area at their Company).

I will try to stay calm about this Slimtype DVD A DS8AZH..... puzzle.

I´ve been surfing the web since my burner went on Burn-Strike, and today the fact of being abandoned customers once HP got the money in it´s claws. At leastI expected anything about it in theyr web-site. Nothing, NOTHING, .....

About 5 minutes ago I found this link where my loved and sick SLIMTYPE DVD DS8AZH is listed with available firmware (many, many other Slimtypes too).

Is it allowed to post other websites ads?

Go to right click My Computer, Manage.

In the left column click on Device Manager

Then in the right column click on DVD/CD rom devices

Right click on your dvd player, then click porperties.

Change your region there and let me know if it helps...

SOURCE: problem copying a movie onto a lightscribe hp dvd +r media disc, using my hp dvd940e dvd writer

The semaphore timeout period has expired refers to the fact that the driver is no longer communicating with the device and failed. Each time a CD Burner is setup for a CD Burning session the burner hardware will perform a 15 step power test to determine the OPC for a Blank Media Disc, OPC meaning Optimum Power Calibration. This test also takes place during the CD Burning process so the CD Burner can determine the best burn speed and method for the disc; this test is called 'Running Optimum Power Calibration'. Although the test is performed by the hardware of the CD Burner, the device initializes the CD Burning Software for the test to take place. This is one reason why your software may report the "Power Calibration Error" or ?Calibration Error Full?. With Power Calibration errors they can be caused by different factors and sometimes difficult to locate, especially if the errors are at random. Below are the known factors that will cause the Power Calibration Errors and how to check each factor, it is important that each point is considered if wanting to get to the bottom of the error. Power Calibration Errors can occur when OPC or ROPC tests for the media disc so the condition of the disc, brand of disc and even the firmware for the CD Burner can be the cause for the errors occurring. A device such as a CD Burners can have different problems if there is a power consumption issue with the system and the Power Calibration Error is just one of those problems. If using either an internal or external CD Burner make sure to disconnect all other devices, except the hard drive and Burner, before attempting to burn a disc. Double check all cables for any faults and if possible test with a 2nd Data Cable. It is also advisable to disconnect the power connection for the CD Burner and test with a spare connector. If you have no trouble with other discs, use them and put to one side the lightscribe, other than that try the burner in another pc or with other burning software, as you can see it's quite ridiculous what problems burners can create.

Check IDE cable connection. You might need a new IDE cable. I had the same problem, until I did the aformentioned. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: my hp pavilion dv9000z dvd burner does not burn

Here's a few things to check:

  1. make sure you have at least 15% free space on your c: drive. If free space is too low, windows has very little hard drive space to use as virtual memory and windows can just barf sometimes.
  2. make sure you don't have a bunch of other programs running when you are burning discs, especially limewire and any other peer to peer or torrent downloading software. Close all programs you are not using, including programs in the system tray (by the clock).
  3. Try burning discs at slower speeds. Also good to check for malware. download these 3 free programs and run all of them. do full scans and delete any problems they find.

also, there are some known hardware issues with this series of laptop. I'm not sure if this is one of them, but in many cases, HP will repair your laptop past the warranty period....free of charge. Seriously.

It is possible that the dvd burner itself is defective.
try this if the steps above don't get things working for you.

Contact HP support, explain the issue, and ask them this question:

"does this problem qualify my laptop for a one time warranty enhancement"?

Hope this helps!

I need to change the region code from the US to the UK for my HP Pavillion dv2000 laptop. The hardware under properties says its a slimtype DVD ADS8A1H ATA device? I have already gone past the 5 allowed...

Hello,

If you have used the 5 allowed changes, then your device is locked at the last one. You may be able to unlock it so it works region free. There are tools on the internet that allow you to do this.

The free way is to just install videoLAN (VLC). If yo use videolan as your video player, it should play any dvd without needing to modify firmware or "hack".

If you want to try to modify your locked DVD region codes, a good place is www.videohelp.com. Here is the direct link to the regon page:

Restoring Region Code

Open My Computer and right click on the DVD Drive and pick Properties. Then click Hardware tab. Then select your DVD Drive from the list and click the Properties button at the bottom.
Then click DVD Region tab at the top.
It should tell you how many more region changes are possible. If it says 0 then it is not possible.
