"Invalid format" how do I change from 1080p to 1080i or 720i?

When I hook my ps3 up to my LG tv I get a message saying "invalid format" it says that a way to fix it is to change it from 1080p to 1080i or 720i, but I don't know how to do this.

I had a second playstation hooked to another tv in my home and took a controller from the non-LG-TV-displaying ps3 and one from a working ps3 on a seperate TV. And used the working ps3 to guide me to the settings menu on the ps3 that was not displaying video. Anyways, if you cannot see the tv screen because it is set on 1080p and your LG will not display it (Only displays up to 1080i). Start The PS3 and press the D-pad buttons in this order.

Left 10+ times. (This Takes you to the far left icon in the XMB)
Right Once. (This is the settings icon)
Down 20+ times. (To reach the bottom of the settings)
Then Up 4 times (This is Display Settings)
Press "X" Once. (This enters Display Settings)
Press Up 5 times (This Makes Sure you are at the top of the sub-menu at Video Output Settings)
Press "X" Once (This Enters Video Output Settings)

Before pressing any more buttons, Know what cables you have pluged into your TV.
For HDMI Just Press "X" and it will auto adjust to for the new TV.
For Component / D-Terminal Output Press Down Once Then "X", and X Again (This changed my ps3 from the 1080p-Invalid Format back to 1080i and fixed my problem.
For Composite Video Output Press Down Twice, Then "X" and X again.

For AV MULTI / SCART Output Press Down Three Times, Then "X"and X again.

The Sony outputs 180P, not 1080i. There is a difference. I don't know what exactly, but Sony says 1080p is for superior.

SOURCE: Will not display 1080p from a Sony ps3??

Connect your PS3 through the HDMI 2 port on the TV and as a PC under the tv settings. Then auto setup the tv on the PS3 and it will now see it as 1080P. It will give you some error message whenever the PS3 is first turned on but it will work. Hope this helps everyone.

SOURCE: 1080p high def issues

The HDMI cable I had originally wasn't a good enough quality. I purchased an HDMI v1.3 cable and everything works at 1080p. You don't need to pay loads for a cable, got mine from Play for £9.99.

Check the resolution capabilities in the manual. It sounds like you either have your DVD set to 1080P which some TV's don't do progressive scan. Set the DVD or whatever to lower resolution like 1080i or 720i. It depends how you hook it up though because if you have it connected HDMI or DVI you can usually do this but with analog you usually can't change the setting.

this could be a PS3 software issue, if you can let it auto update, if the problem isnt resolved try a 720i setting or a 1080p, if still no joy your display may be on the way out

My tv says invalid format when i connect my ps3 using an hdmi cable

Your PS3 is sending a 1080P signal to a TV that can only handle 720P or 1080i. Connect the PS3 using the A/V cables, fix the resolution and then go back to HDMI.

Ps3 reset

turn the PS3 off. hold the power button for at least 5 seconds or until you hear another beep.
This should reset all your ps3's settings.  If you have an HDMI connection, wait for a couple of seconds so that the PS3 recognizes and negotiates the right video output for your TV.
