Then follow the steps (easy) and you will get 1 free update.

Go to the TomTom website. Download and install the Home Application (if you did not get a CD_rom with your device). Run the HOME application and click Update my device first. If you device has been recently put into service (less than 30 days) you may have the right to update the maps free of charge. If not you will find maps to buy.

There are two types of updates for Garmin GPS units; firmware and maps. "Firmware" updates are always free and can performed by downloading the webupdater program from:

The site above provides a Webupdater download link and complete, easy to follow instructions. Connect the GPS to your computer & run the Webupdater program from time to time to make sure you have the latest firmware running in you GPS at all times.

Map updates however, usually require a fee be paid to access. If you purchase a GPS within a certain period of time from when a new map set is released, you'll often be allowed a "one time" free update. After that, you'll have to purchase map sets one at a time (at intervals of your choosing) or, purchase a "lifetime" map set subscription. Maps are updated up to 4 times a year, and a subscription allows downloading up to 4 map sets a year. The subscription is slightly more costly than a one time purchase, and for most people, is a much more cost effective method.

Before you begin, you must have a compatible map set CD / DVD or, a preloaded map set on memory card by Garmin. Many retailers sell these map sets, but you may end up with an older or non-compatible set instead. There are options for *lifetime* downloadable map set updates directly from Garmin for less than $150. These will allow downloading updates (maps will be upgraded up to 4x per year according to Garmin). Speak with a Garmin Customer Service rep to help decide which would be the best update path for you.

Are you trying to update a Nuvi that already has European maps installed or are you trying to install European maps into a Nuvi that does not already have them?

If it's a map update, are you getting the error when you download the update to pc, or when you are trying to install the update to the Nuvi?

When I install US map updates into a streetpilot or Nuvi, it typically ends with a download error but the maps do in fact get updated and the new software versions are shown in the setup menus.

The Garmin rep I spoke with says that is normal.
