The exact reason is available at microsoft's website: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927836 If it does not solve..... Compatibity may be an issue, I think you should check the (Windows Vista) Control Panel > System properties > Hardware > Device manager to see the USB/IEEE-1394 ports are istalled propery and are not disabled( if so enable it). Also check the BIOS setup to verify that USB/Firewire ports set to appropriate mode(Highspeed/Full speed) If all the above is correct, try downloading the latest drivers for your camera that supprots Windows Vista & install it. And then plug in your camera again. Certain Device drivers are prevented from loading in Vista due to some security reasons. you can also log on to microsoft website to know more about it. More support is possible if can specify the camera model, manufacturer etc.

I lost the disc to install to download my pics from my camera

You need it only if you use very old OS (Windows 98SE etc.), if you use WinXP, Vista, Windows 7 you do not need install your camera to move or copy pictures to PC - it is recognized automatically.

Vista and firewire 1394?

Firewire works fine under Vista, but it's quite possible your USB to Firewire bridge doesn't have proper Vista drivers. You wouldn't expect Vista to include these, they would be installed from a disc that came with your adaptor. USB to Firewire is a questionable option at best... there are often problems with it. You may be better off with a PC-Card or ExpressCard solution, if the laptop is your only computer.

Also, when the camera says "DV IN", it's expecting video from the PC to be sent to it, it's not in capture mode. Most camcorders must be in either "play" mode, or a special "link to PC" mode in order to even be recognized by Windows (any version) as a video input device.

However, until you resolve the issue of supporting your Firewire device in Vista, nothing the camcorder does will be an issue yet. You should check the documentation that came with your USB to Firewire device, the driver disc, etc. for information on Vista support.

Camera not recognized

Chances are, it's a driver issue. It isn't uncommon for a new OS to "break connectivity" with a camcorder. It usually takes a few months for new drivers to be written. So I'd check with Sony for Vista drivers.
