USB external hard drive does not show up on OS X desktop

My external hard drive does not show up on my Mac OS X desktop. (I have Mac OS X 10.4.11 installed.) Nor does it show up in Utilites as connected to any USB port. (The system requirements are Mac OS 8.6 through OS X.10.1 or higher) It worked in Mac OS 9, when I had that operating system. I recently tested it in Windows Vista, and it works. When I plug it into the USB port in the back of my computer, a blue light comes on so it looks like it is getting enough power. Does it need a driver or is there another problem? Thankful for any suggestions.

You need to be sure that it is formatted as a FAT32 drive and not as a NTFS. When you are in Vista right click on the drive icon and click on properties. You will see NFTS or FAT32 under file system. Your drive must be FAT32 to be recognized by a Mac. Iomega.com has a FAT32 formatting software that you can download for free on your Vista PC and re-format the drive as a FAT32 drive.

  • Bob B Apr 25, 2009

If you intend to use this hard drive in a mixed environment then I recommened that you use FAT32 as I previously suggested. MAC will not recognize NTFS as that is an exclusively PC formatting option, just as a PC will not recognize HFS (I have no idea what HHS is, either does mac.com). I run both MACS and PC's and the only mixed environment formatting option that I've used is FAT32. I run several USB external drives all formatted to FAT32 and have no issues. You do need to download a formatting program as the built in ones for PC and MAC will only format your drive into multiple small blocks. Mac forums also claims that you can format to HFS+ thru your onboard formatting tools, and says they will work on PC's.

Actually, the drive needs to be HHS, not FAT32, and OSX 10.4.11 DOES IN FACT support external drives.installed on USB, so I really wonder............

Anyway, let's get to the solution to your problem, a drive which works and shows up everywhere except on the desktop of your MAC

I think that if your external drive has an external power option, that it will work fine, given less power than you apparently need for this drive provided by the USB port.

There should be a 12vdc input external power adaptor in the box with your drive that should solve your problem.

Odd, but I use that OSX version, and externals work just fine when powered by the 12vdc power adaptor that comes in the box according to the Verbatim site.

You're welcome and let me know how this works for you. I am very interested.

Also go into the Disk Utility that you will find in the Utilities Folder within the Applications Folder and try the various Repair and First Aid Format and Partitioning Utilities you will find there.

Your drive may be in NTFS file format that is not supported natively by your mac, try looking for NTFS support or reformat your drive to FAT32.
tip

Formatting an external hard drive with Mac OS X's Disk Utility

Formatting your new external hard drive is not as difficult as you may think. In fact, you don't even have to be a computer techie or uber-Mac geek to perform this procedure successfully.

The tool you would use, to format your drive within your Mac OS X system, is the built-in utility application called Disk Utility.

Disk Utility is Apple Inc.'s defacto utility application, for performing disk related tasks within the Mac OS X volume.

47fc804.png

From creating new images, to burning CDs and DVDs to formatting hard drives, Disk Utility performs well enough to keep not only your Mac OS X volume on your hard drive error free, but keep your hard drive healthy and error-free as well.

I could go on in detail, admirably describing more features of this versatile Mac OS X tool, but the purpose of this FixYa tip, is to show you how to easily format your external hard drive. So that is where I will take you now.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are generally two formats in Disk Utility that you can use to effectively format your hard drive.

Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - if you want a Mac readable hard drive only

MS-DOS (FAT 32) - If you want your external hard drive to be read by both Mac and PC.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--STEPS FOR FORMATTING YOUR HARD DRIVE WITH DISK UTILITY--
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
• First, make sure your external hard drive is connected securely to your Mac and is turned on.

•Next, from your desktop, click anywhere on a blank space on your desktop. Now you should see Finder listed near the Apple menu icon.

• From the Finder menu, click on Go, then Utilities from the
drop-down menu. This will take you to your Utilities* folder.

(*You can also get to the Disk Utility application via Applications > Utilities folder)

• Now, locate and launch the Disk Utility application.

When Disk Utility opens you will see a left side window, which will show
all connected hard drives and optical drives. It is here that you
should see your external hard drive listed in that window.

bdf4c64.png

• When you locate it, simply select it and then select Partition
from the tabs on the right hand side.

a11d5a9.png

• Change the Volume Scheme from Current to 1 Partition

• Make sure to provide a name for your new external hard drive.

• Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) from the Format
drop down menu, for a bootable Mac only external hard drive.

• Or select MS-DOS from the Format drop down menu, for a bootable Mac & PC external hard drive.

From there, click the Options button, located toward the bottom of
your window.

This will open a partition scheme selection window as seen in this screen shot:

04286c5.png

• Select GUID Partition Table for bootability on a Intel processor based
Mac.

• Or select the Apple Partition Map for bootability on a PowerPC based Mac.

• Click the OK button.

Finally, click the Partition button and allow Disk Utility to format your new external hard drive.

When this process is complete, you now have a newly formatted, ready to use hard drive.

Believe it or not, this process can be completed faster than you think.
Using this method with Disk Utility, I was able to format my new 1TB Iomega USB external in less than 20 minutes.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Final Note:
I used the external hard drive as the focus for showing you how to format and prepare your hard drive for use on your Mac, but this feature can also work with internal hard drives as well.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For more information about some of the disk repairing features of Disk Utility, here is a great support link for this nifty and quite effective Apple utility for the Mac OS X platforms:

How do i back up a power book g4? What application do I need to do the back up?

Suchisart,
If you want a stand alone backup solution, you can download a free program called "Carbon Copy Cloner" and purchase a USB 2.0 external hard drive. You can use the CCC software to backup the entire contents of your Powerbook's hard drive or just selected files to the external USB hard drive.

If your Powerbook is unable to boot into OS X and you need to recover the files that are on the internal hard drive, you can boot the Powerbook into "Target Disk Mode" and transfer the files via firewire cable to another Mac. To do this do the following.
  1. With both Macs off connect them with a firewire cable.
  2. Turn on the Powerbook and hold down the "T" during startup.
  3. Once the large icon shows up on screen your in "TDM".
  4. Turn on the other Mac and login to your account.
  5. The Powerbook's hard drive should mount on your desktop.
  6. You'll be able to transfer your files from the Powerbook's hard drive just like you would an external hard drive, thumb drive, etc.

Don't forget to vote and leave us some feedback. :)

Looking for the Mac driver for a 500gb

A ahhhh Mac driver? A mac should just pick up the fact that you plug in an external drive. It might even detect if it's formatted Windows NTFS. You probably have to format it for Mac OS.

My mac doesn't show the microspot 500gb slim-drive hard drive anywhere...? i've connected the hd with my mac but nothing happens... on the manual i's written, that if i work with macintosh, i should erase...

What model Mac is it? Some earlier models only had USB 1 and they can be problematic when trying to connect a USB2 device.
If you look in the system profiler (go to about this mac and then select More Info) does the drive show there under the USB tab?
Does it show in Disk Utility (in the Utilities Folder) as an external drive?

External hard drive won't work with Mac

It needs to be formatted for macs.
I had this problem and with mine as well. (VOX is a horrible company)

One of these two processes should work but I forgot which I did.

Go to spotlight and search for disk utility. If the drive shows up on the left you can click on it then. Click the erase tab. select mac formatting and then click erase.

If it does not show up when you do this you will need to do the same process on a PC.
