with it empty need to look at the bottom of the unit and see if the pulley and belt setup is bad.. my sisters un it broke the pulley and hers is newer..seems they dont make them to last anymore..

On the back of the selector switch there is a timer motor or clock motor assembly. The gears wear out or the motor has lost its ability to go through the cycles. Replace it and you should be fine.
I had the same problem, but due to the great info on the internet, I found the problem and solution. I have been able to temporarily fix it until I can get someone out to repair the plunger.
