When you connect it to the computer, are you turning it on first?
If so, is it showing as a drive under 'My Computer'? If so, go to right click> Properties> Autoplay tab.
Are you using a compatible media player to sync the device?
Have you installed the necessary drivers (available here: http://support.creative.com/Products/ProductDetails.aspx?catID=213&CatName=MP3+Players&subCatID=214&subCatName=ZEN&prodID=15306&prodName=ZEN+V+Plus

Get downwards on this page and go to Manual selection.
Next choose your language and the Operating System, in this case: Vista and SUBMIT.
The name of the application software for Vista is called:
ZNV_PCApp32_LA_6_41_10.exe

In posing the problem, since the CD was still in the PC after setting up the program for Zen V Plus I wrongly assumed that the drivers had been loaded. Between the FAQ on the Creative site and FixYa, I updated the Windows Media Player, checked and reloaded the drivers and followed the bouncing ball directions to get the little bugger going, Thanks.
