My Dell 20 gig Gen 2 will no reload the firmware it says it not connected. When I plug it into the usb port it is reconized says docked also the portable device screen comes up which leads me to believe the computer reconizes it but when I try to reload the firmware from the dell site it comes up to a screen that says your device is not connected. I tried clean up, format that did not make a difference.
If your Dell DJ player is no longer recognized by the upgrade firmware even with the correct, original device driver installed, then you will need to install a windows 'MTP' driver by doing the following. Note that this applies to Windows XP only.
1. make sure you have the SP2 XP upgrade.
2. Install Windows Media Player 10 or roll it back to version 10 if you are using a later version. You can roll it back by going to 'Add or Remove programs' and uninstalling any WMP upgrade from the 'Change or Remove Programs' dialog window. Note: don't uninstall WMP enitrely from the 'Add/remove windows components' dialog.
3. Go get this file: fixup.zip Unzip it in a temporary directory and run the fixup.cmd by double-clicking in explorer or using the windows 'Run' command. Follow the instructions it prints in its DOS window about deleting the Dell device in the hardware manager.
4. plug your DJ player into the USB port. XP should now say 'Found MTP device' or something similar.
5. Get the Dell DJ 1.02 firmware from their support site appropriate for your player. Run the firmware upgrade. The software should detect your player this time.
A good reference for the Dell DJ stuff is here: gotzune.com
Note: I can't personally recommend the 'PlayForSure' firmware as I have not been successful upgrading to it. WMP 11 does not seem to work with the Dell DJ but WMP10 does and the device Sync function works just fine.
For almost ALL of the MP3 players out there that seem bricked due to a firmware upgrade failure or some other reason, they can be usually restored in a simlar way by installing a basic 'MTP' driver which allows windows to at least send a file to it, and by putting the player into a recovery mode as defined by the manufacturer.
Some solutions tell you to unistall dj drivers, install fixup.zip, after rolling back WMP 11 to 10. Then reinstal the DJ firmware upgrade 2.10.03 or later. But it seems it is fairly difficult to find fixup so here is a link to it (took me hours to find it).
Solved! The problem is once again with Micro$oft Windows...Media Player to be exact. WMP always overides the drivers you attempt to install since the generic windows driver is more recent. (Using Windows XP)
The only work around that I could find is to temporarily uninstall Windows Media Player.
First go plug you juke box into your charger so you have a well charged battery. (This is important)
In my case, I had to Rollback WMP 11 in "add/remove programs" on the control panel. This rolled me back to WMP 9.
Return to the control panel, add/remove programs, on the left side of the dialog box click on add/remove windows components.
Uncheck Windows Media Player.
Navigate to C:\Program Files\Dell\Digital Jukebox Drivers
Execute the program drvunins, it will remove all jukebox drivers from your system.
Make sure your jukebox is unplugged from your system.
Reboot.
I then installed driver 1.02.03
I then tried to install an older firmware version and it failed....however it did go through about half of the process first, which was encouraging because before it just told me that my player was not connected (when it was).
I finally had success with firmware version 2.10.03.
Success finally! My jukebox is alive and well!
I have since reinstalled Windows Media Player 11 and everything is back to "normal".
There is a newer firmware (2.20.07) however I won't be upgrading unless a sincere need arises.
Perhaps someone knows of a shotcut so you don't have to uninstall the media player.
I'm just glad to have my Jukebox back.
Hope this helps.

After a long experiment to get my dj to show on a computer. Also to transfer music to and from dj. This does not work on new versions of windows. Instead you have to install Linux Ubuntu (newest version) and download gnome jukebox. Then dj will connect perfectly.
Did anyone ever find a solution to this problem or did you just replace it?
Thanks
SOURCE: dell dj firmware
I had the same problem and it turns out the firmware did get loaded, the program just didn't close out properly. If you go to Settings & Info-->Information on your DJ you should see that it is the updated version.

my dell dj says its in recovery mode.an it gives me 4 choices clean up,format all, reload firmware, and reboot. ive clicked on all of them an it stays on that same screen. what should i do???
I too have the same problem. I cant get my DJ to do anything but whats going on with yours. I tried to reinstall my firmware because I was having trouble transferring new music and I thought maybe that was the problem. So if anyone does have a solution to Jerry's problem maybe you can tell me why none of my new music transfers as well. Thank You.
dj in recovery mode
I have the original jukebox and the computer will not recognize it at all then when I download drivers it says that its not connected
We took our computer to get an annual cleaning, and they erased our dj information. I just downloaded the 4 updates at support.dell.com and my unit is not getting recognized at all. Do I need the original cd to fix this?
