I had similar problems with my GR-D470 I installed the JVC software from the CD shipped with the camcorder, I then set the camcorder to play and opened the power producer application. I then used a USB to 4pin DV cable that I got with my digital camera. I connected the cable to a USB port on my PC and the 4pin end to a slot on the camcorder. Once this the camcorder was seen by the PC, I could control the camcorder by playing, pausing etc. and most importantly record to the PC.

How it's supposed to work is to get a program that recognizes the camera, then the tape can be captures. Windows Movie Maker never supported it. In fact Microsoft doesn't even support it anymore. They have recommended using Pinncale Studio to work with DV cameras.
Once you install Studio, put the tape in, turn the camera on, Studio will load up.

THE CAMCORDER RECORDING IS OF ONE HOUR AS YOU SAY.
CONFIRM IT IS ONE HOUR AT ITS HIGHEST PIXEL VALUES .Actually it must be 1 hour at its lowest pixel value ,and as you increase the pixels ,the recording time decreases.(26mins).
record at a lower pixel value and see the difference.
This information should help you a lot .bye.
