Sony Grand WEGA KF50WE610 50" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television Logo
Gary Krannacker Posted on Oct 06, 2013

I have a 55" Sony Wega HDTV rear projection television and it has developed purple pin size spots on the screen. It started with just one spot and quickly grew to hundreds of spots over a couple weeks. Does anyone not what the cause may be related to?

You should do a regular cleaning maintenance to the air filter and exchange it regularly. Small dust particules may get into the internal projection module and those spots became visible.

SOURCE: wega KDF-50WE655 has purple spots, support says wega engine bad

I have over 10 years experience in electronic tech support.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but the problem you've described sounds like one of the circuit boards that control the picture quality needs to be replaced. The cost of the board would likely be in excess of $200. There are usually several boards in a TV like that that control the picture and when one goes, you can get anything from lines in the picture to poor picture quality from blurriness. The main question is do you want to spend $1000 to fix a used TV?

I hope I've provided you useful assistance and that this information allows you to make an informed decision as to how to proceed from here. Please be sure to vote on my response. I hope I've earned a good rating from you today.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Dark smudges/spots on my HDTV screen

The model indicated here Sony Grand WEGA KDF-50WE655 is a LCD rear projection and rarely if ever requires cleaning.

If black spots or such are gradually appearing the issue on this model is the optical light engine.

Set uses a LCD engine which the lamp shines directly into and heat from that very hot lamp can damage sensitive baffles inside the engine.

I would suggest also you contact Sony as they have on several models extended the warranty for this kind of issue---Engine is very expensive part and several of these Sony sets were involved in a class action lawsuit--hence they are dealing with them.

Do not take no for an answer if you want them to help you---the hinge that is sqeeks gets oiled...........

Yellow & purple spots permantly appear on the screen

Hi;
Unfortuntely its time to replace the optics engine, Engines make up about 80 percent of the television, replaceing the optics engine will be like purchasing a new set. There is no way to address this problem but to change the optics engine, A good place to purchase one new or rebuilt is www.tristatemodules.com

Yellow-green spot in center of screen

Defective light engine. Contact Sony support. They warrantied a lot of these sets even after the warranty had expired because of so many going bad after 3-4 yrs. Have the complete model and serial number ready when you call them.

Pink and Blue Spots

Sony guarantee the consumer to replace the optical block assembly for thousands of dollars in parts and labor every four years or when the pink and blue spots appear every time. Then replace the optical block assembly again and again every time the spots appear.

Yellow spot on Sony 55"

Possible dust in light engine? What ever you do, don't blow it out with the set on or hot. This easily equals instant death to bulb.
