Sounds like a seized bearing. they can be replaced at your local motor shop or pool store. now that its buzzing, i would also suggest getting the start capacitor replaced at the same time.

SOURCE: my hayward northstar pump makes a loud noise when

If you have a crack in your basket you may have a clogged impeller. With the power off reach back into the pump through the pump pot with a long screwdriver and feel around. If it feels spongey it there you have a clog. Take the serew driver an use an oceleting motion in a counter clockwise direction this should loosen the clog then reach in with a long set of thin pliers and pull the clog out. This should fix your problem and once water is flowing your pump should quiet down.

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

Your motor bearings are failing. It is most often caused by a leaking pump seal. It is a relatively inexpensive repair if it is caught early enough; before the shaft is damaged from the corrosive water eating into the steel. Take it to a local electric motor repair shop for inspection. It will likely need a set of 203 bearings and a 201 seal. All told, depending on the labor rates, it should be less than $75.

If this answer does not fix your problem, please comment with additional details prior to rating the answer. Positive feedback is appreciated once your problem is solved!

I have Hayward Centurian SE 2 hp pool motor pump, around 15 years old. Just the other day it started making a loud whining noise. Is there a quick fix for this?

if its whining but still spinning, the bearings are done. If it just makes a loud noise, the capacitor could be bad or the bearings have seized.

I have a hayward XP power flo motor, this season it seems to be making an extremely loud noise when I plug it in. Is there a way to fix this?

Usually, if the motor is extremely loud it is caused by a problem in the motor. It could also be caused by a bad seal but then it usually leaks from between the pump and the motor or an impeller problem. The most likely motor problem causing noise is bad bearings. These bearings are usually not worth replacing because the water that may have caused the bearings to fail have also caused corrosion on the bearing mount.
