Noticed the refrigerator (Kenmore Elite Side-by-Side) was not cold, compressor really hot and found that the condensor fan had failed. I unplugged unit to see if the compressor was running and when plugged in the compressor did start running. Cleaned coils and place a smalll fan to provide air flow but after 24 hours unit will not cool below 52deg.
Freezer works fine
Is compressor bad from over heating?
The compressor should be OK this time because you caught it in time. But if the condenser fan stops you need to consider replacing the fan. I have had refrigerators do fine until the fan motor warms up and you are away, it stops. Don't think you should use the refrigerator until the fan is fixed. Sea Breeze
Look on bottom frame of the cold food section and get me the model number. will look like this for Sears 795.775621
Yes if freezer is working good the damper may be closed or stuck that sends cold air around in fresh food compartment.
What is your freezer temperature now?
Can't blame it on condenser failure totally, but lots of bad things happen if condenser fan or the evaporator fan stop. It puts a big strain on compressor and causes it to heat above what it can handle. It also causes an internal overload inside the compressor to become weak and the compressor only get warm and the overload kicks out. Yes its possible the ice began when this happened, but like I said a lot of different things happen when something fails. I hope you have replaced the condenser fan by now, because a house fan will not be able to take the place of the condenser fan. When either fan stops its critical that you make sure they are going. Most times you notice that the refrigerator is not cooling properly or the compressor stops and starts too often.
You can find a fan at a local Refrigeration supplier for less than buying on-line. Or get one from a refrigerator that someone no longer needs. Do this and you will be good to go, Thanks, Sea Breeze

ok I check to see if I had ice or frost build up in freezer and did not find any. Freezer is blowing cold to the top vent but it is not entering the Frig. Is the damper control or temp control bad?

ok I removed the damper and it indeed was closed. I did find a little ice on the back side of the unit. I removed the ice and unpluged the 2 power connects and plugged them back in, it opened and now air is flowing. Could all of this been the result of the failed condesor fan motor?
