Go to the Garmin web site and register you GPS. IT will entitle you to a free map update one time. Just go to http://www.garmin.com and click on the support tab.

It is absolutely necessary to frequently update the quick GPS fix information for better functioning of the GPS. To update Quick GPS fix you need to connect the GPS to the computer. Once GPS is connected it will ask you whether you would like to install the TomTom home software. say yes to that suggestion and follow the tips on the screen. You need to update it,connect it to your computer and download new updates for it,you can do this for free,i do mine about once a month,hope this helps.
You are in an area that the map does not support. If this is a new construction or street, highway etc it has not been updated on your map loaded on the device. You can check with Garmins website to see if a map update is available. If not you will have to wait until it is updated and released by Garmin.
If you are referring to firmware updates and you have downloaded Garmin's Web Updater, just plug the unit into the computer. The Web Updater will connect online and let you know if there are available updates. If you are referring to map updates, it is up to you when to update the maps, but new maps are usually available for purchase each year. You don't have to update them that often, though.
