Sony VGN-460 Memory & CPU Upgrade? Noisy Fan How do I replace it?

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-460. Stock out of the box with one exception... I bought and installed a 1Gb memory module - I installed it in the socket which is exposed and has a cver on the bottom of the laptop. Everything is fine it works, but is still slower than I would like. I would like to upgrade the CPU if possible... Is it possible to install a faster CPU? (I have done this before many times on other systems so I am technically capable/experienced) I however do not know what CPUs are compatible with the system. Can you tell me? I would also like to upgrade the memory some more. I have the system apart now (upgrading the HD). There is a memory slot inside under the keyboard. At the moment it has a 256Mb module in it. Can I upgrade this memory? What is the maximum I can install in the internal slot? I have one more issue. The cooling fan is noisy. Is it possible to replace it with a quieter one or at least a new one which is at least as quiet as it was when it was new? If so where can I purchase one? Thank you so much for all your help. AlexL

I upgraded my memory to 1 gb each. worked fine. I just took the old module into CompUsa and they handed me new ones.Noisy fan eventually stopped totally. I bought an external laptop cooling pad for $20 at Frys works but not too portable. The fan appears to be inseparable from the heatsink . I've seen them for sale, but I've not latched on to one yet.

The Crucial website suggests you can put 1GB in each slot. http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/listparts.aspx?model=VAIO%20VGN-S460%20Series Sony might know which CPUs will work with this. Hopefully any Pentium-M with 533 FSB.

Sony Vaio VGN-S5VP/B Noisy CPU Fan

Buy a can of compressed air, a can of fine mechanisms oil, take the bottom cover off the laptop (only a Phillips screwdriver is needed) and clean and oil the fan.

Sony vaio fan is making a grinding noise, how can i fix this?

The sony VGN-S460 seems to have an inherent problem with their cpu fans. It is apparent that the fan uses a ball bearing system which over time becomes worn and causes the grinding sound.

The only solution is to replace the entire fan assembly as they are inseparable.

My sony vaio VGN-CS11S is soo noisy

The fan's bearings are probably going bad, or there may be some object that was sucked in to cause the noise.

Sony Vaio laptop fan is very loud and continously running

My pcg-k33 was very noisy (fan) so I vacuumed the fan opening with a powerful shop vac. This helped alot. I think that the CPU temperature triggers the fan so keeping the cooling system clean is important. As well, there are openings on the bottom for air so it is important to keep the unit on a surface that doesn't impede airflow (on your lap is a bad idea)

Noisy fan--sony vaio vgn-s460

then if that is the problem to your pc then turn your pc upside down and dissassemled the screw at the back then your keyboard should be lift up slightly and if you can not do that on your own try to contact someone in that field to help you but just for you to tell the person that you know what is wrong w2ith the pc the person should try and check if there is anything too close to the fan that the fan is touching and if there is nothing the fan is touching and the noise continue then change the fan with a new one. bye any question again.
