you have to stop Autorun feature of your windows which kicks in when we connect any new storage device first, then you will be able to format the drive and start fresh.

Steps to remove autorun:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/967715
(restart your computer first without the pen drive and then start the below procedure)

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following entry in the registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionpoliciesExplorerNoDriveTypeAutorun
  3. Right-click NoDriveTypeAutoRun, and then click Modify.
  4. In the Value data box, type 0xFF to disable all types of drives. Or, to selectively disable specific drives, use a different value as described in the "How to selectively disable specific Autorun features" section.
  5. Click OK, and then exit Registry Editor.
  6. Restart the computer.

SOURCE: how 2 delete file autorun in my system without appearing in futur

When your computer automatically creates a "autorun.inf" or "autorun.exe" file on your pen drive, you have a virus. This is the way it multiplies itself in order to infect other computers. First, do a virus check and disinfection procedure on your computer (use a strong antivirus, like Kaspersky - they have 30-day free trial). After that, plug in the device, and now try to format it. It should work, if your computer is not too affected.

Everyone doesn't want computers infected with a virus. The question is, where the virus entered into the computer. There are two possibilities, may be infected from the Internet or external device (flash drive, memory cards, external hard drives, etc). Flash drives are external devices that are often used. When we insert the flash drive to the infected computer, flash drive will be infected with the virus. In a flash drive that is infected, will form the autorun.inf file. Autorun.inf files will work automatically, every flash drive is inserted. Setting the default operating system is windows autorun when inserted an external device. Autorun windows, used by the autorun.inf, to enter into the computer. To protect your computer from viruses, there are a few things done:
1. Update anti-virus
2. Setting anti-virus in the guard position
3. Turn off windows autorun
4. Make anti virus auto scan flash drives

Turn off autorun Windows

Win Xp : Press START - run - regedit - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer - NoDriveTypeAutoRun - Value Data - Type = ff - OK

I recently got a trojan horse on a pc whilst my Gogear was plugged into the pc charging. After i wiped the virus off my pc i noticed my mp3 would'nt play the mp3 files n flashed a red light instead of the...

a couplle of options is to see if your PC Antivirus has an option to detect trojans etc on your USB devices. Gogear are basically usb storage devices that act as music players. you have a trojan that has changed settings in you computer. ZFirst set of steps is to eliminate the trojan from your gogear ( after re cleaning your PC). So try these steps. or you can try and reformat the gogear as well.

Instructions
    • 1 Press the "Shift" key as you insert the USB drive into your computer. Holding down "Shift" will keep the computer from auto-playing the device. Click "Cancel" to exit the auto-run if you do not hold "Shift" down long enough and the auto-play function starts.
    • 2 Open the Windows Command Prompt by clicking "Start" and then highlighting and clicking "Run." Type "cmd" (without the quotes) in the text box, and press "Enter." If you use Windows Vista, click the Windows icon, then type "cmd" in the "Search" box and hit "Enter."
    • 3 Switch the Command Prompt to your USB flash drive by typing the letter of the drive followed by a colon--for example, "F:" without the quotes--and pressing "Enter." You can locate the letter that Windows assigns to your flash drive by clicking "Start," then highlighting and clicking "My Computer."
    • 4 List the directory of files on your flash drive by typing "dir/w/o/a/p" (no quotes) into the Command Prompt and pressing "Enter." This line will tell your USB drive to compile and display a list of all files.
    • 5 Locate common viruses, Trojan horses, or malicious files in the list. Two of the most commonly reported pieces of USB malware will appear as "Autorun.inf" or "smss.exe" (both without the quotes). Unless you are using your USB to transfer a program from one computer to another, you should be suspicious of any executable file--file types ending ".exe"--that appears in your flash drive's directory. Also, as a general rule of thumb, if you see any files on your USB drive other than ones you have personally stored on it, your flash drive is infected.
    • 6 Set your USB drive to show all files so that you can delete them. Copy and paste "attrib -r -a -s -h *.*" (without the quotes) into the command prompt and press "Enter." These letters stand for "Read Only, Archive, System and Hidden File," and entering this line will tell your USB file to recognize them.
    • 7 Delete any viruses, Trojan horses, malware and suspicious files. Type "del" (no quotes) followed by a space and then the name of the file; for instance, "del smss.exe". Press "Enter" to delete that file from your USB flash drive.

Cant format my son

VIRUS OR TROJAN INFECTIONS:

Virus or trojans can run some process that keeps running in background. This not only harms the computer, but also prevents the pen drive from formatting as it shows that the drive is in use. Remove and re-insert thepen drive, don't double click on drive and cancel autorun operations if it starts automatically. Run a virus scan on pen drive, this will help fix the issue. Now format the pen drive.

Always take precautions while using pen drives on other computers. See the some of our posts below on protecting your pen drive from viruses:

CORRUPTED FLASH CHIPS ON PEN DRIVE:

If the pen drive is not detected at all, or shows a less capacity, then there are high chances that its a chip corruption. Flash chips are the actual hardware components that save the data. A physical or electrical or electromagnetic damage to these chips make the pen drive faulty. This can happen because of voltage fluctuations and faulty USB ports. In such case, get the flash drive replaced if its under warranty as it can not be fixed otherwise.

FAKE PEN DRIVES:

Sounds a bit un-believable but true. There are a lot of pen drives in the market which are of very cheap quality which are fake copies of some known brands. Beware of such pen-drives. Always purchase pen-drives or memory-cards from a reliable source with bill and warranty to avoid any mess later.

How to remove write protect on my usb flash drive

Maybe you are infected with a virus. Run CMD on rrun command or get to run the Windows Dos Prompt. Goto flash drive drive letter. Then type DIR/AH, this will show you list of hidden files in your flash drive usually if you get an autorun.inf you are infected with a virus. Type TYPE AUTORUN.INF with the space in between. This will show you the script if it will run an exe command usually untrusted one. Usually the autorun.inf and the linked exe is attributed to be hidden, system, and read only.

If the files in your flash drive is not so important you can try to delete the autorun.inf only. But you will gonna do this first. In its drive letter type ATTRIB -H -R -S AUTORUN.INF hit enter. Then type DEL AUTORUN.INF. trying to access the flash drive in windows screen you can get that something is cannot be found. But you could actually delete and load files into it. Or try to access the drive rightclicking it then select EXPLORE.

Hope this help. Post comments if this does not help.

Usb flash drive icon changes into folder icon

This issue may have resulted from a virus infection on the machine the drive was plugged into.

You’ll need to delete the file autoruns.inf located on your flash drive.

By default, Windows hides this file, so before you can delete it you must make a couple of changes (you may reverse these after you’ve finished):

Open My Computer
Tools
Folder Options…
Click on the View tab
Under “Hidden files and folder” choose “Show hidden files and folders”
Remove the tick from “Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
OK

Go back to My Computer and click on your flash drive. If you can’t open it that way, try right clicking on it and choose “Explore.”

Find the autoruns.inf file, right click on it and choose “Delete.” Confirm “Yes.”

Unplug and re-plug the drive in. You should be back to normal.

Hope that helps.

Cannot access folders- folders not shown

You have to make Disinfection in order to be able to open your folders.

First of all go to http://www.precisesecurity.com/tools-resources/adware-tools/flash-disinfector/

And You'll see Download Here:
Flash Disinfector <<<< Hit it
Save it to your Desktop

Now Turn OFF any Antivirus.

Connect the wire of iRiver X20 MP3 Player to your computer.

Go to "Flash Disinfector" on your desktop, and double click it. Hold on 10 seconds the screen will disappear, then everything will work properly.

Now you can open your folders, but you are highly recommended NOT to only disinfect it but also to remove it, because it's a trojan virus that calls autorun.inf << generic trojan horse that affect your AutoRun of the drives.

Run Your explorer as Administrator and
Go to http://www.bitdefender.com/scanner/online/free.html

do Online scanning. It will automatically detect the trojan and any other virus in case this trojan is worm and affected other files, so everything will be removed automatically.

Also, you are highly recommended to restart your PC when the Online Scanner is done.

This will work 100%
