If you have the manual look to see if this machine has a drop feed system. If it does, look for the button, switch or lever type thing near the bottom that raises and lower the feed dogs. Move that to sew. and try again.

If your machine does not have a drop feed system. Remove any fabric that is in the machine and remove the presser foot and needle so you can see. Watch the feed dogs as you run the machine by hand. Are they moving at all? If they are... move them to the highest point they go and feel to see if they are reaching slightly above the plate. If they are not... you'll either have to have it adjusted by a professional (recommended) Or if you are willing to take the risk of messing it up fully... you can take of the plate and look to see if you can find the screws, etc that adjust the feed dogs. (This may or may not require the removal of the bobbin assembly and carriage) Proceed with caution.. take pictures before you remove something... take out items one at a time and lay out on a piece of sticky side up tape in a line. (tape in case you knock something off)

Good luck

Singer model 518....the material won't feed through. It wants to sew but won't feed cloth through. Thks

Be sure you have the stitch length set high enough that the fabric will actually move instead of sewing mostly in one spot.

One other thing to check is the presser foot applying enough pressure to the fabric so that the feed dogs can grab the fabric? On the top left side of the machine, there is probably either a dial or a push-type button. That would most likely be the pressure adjustment. The tighter that is set, the harder the pressure the presser foot will apply and the more the feed dogs will grab the fabric.

Check that the feed dogs are in the "up" position so they will pull the fabric through the machine. Are the feed dogs actually moving forward, raising above the needle plate, pulling toward the back of the machine, and then dropping below the needleplate before moving forward again? If not, then the problem could be with the feed dogs.

Your machine appears to be a mechanical model. If so, it could be the machine needs a good over-all cleaning and oiling--a couple drops of fresh, good quality sewing machine oil every place that metal rubs on metal (no plastic parts, belts...). Feed dogs are frequently affected when the sewing machine does not receive regular maintenance.

How do I get fabric to feed through when sewing?

Check the feed dogs are in UP position. If so, are they moving back and forward when turning the hand wheel (be careful if you have a needle in the machine). If they are not moving back/forward, it is either the lower shaft has slipped out of position or the stepper motor has gone bad and needs replacing. Your local authorized husqvarnaviking dealer should be able to repair the machine. You can find the nearest dealer at http://www.husqvarnaviking.com/us

How can I get the material to move forward when machine operating?

the feed dogs are not working, they hold the fabric against the
presser foot, so the fabric is moved forward, they are in the needle
plate, they should be seen & felt in the center of the needle plate.

Won't sew, the fabric stays in one spot

is the problem the fabric is not moving forward but staying in one spot? which would mean the feeddogs need to be checked to see what position there in --up for sewing---down for darning
or the thread is not feeding into the machine?

in the needle plate area you'll find the feed dogs, they move the fabric forward as you sew, they should be up to sew . most sewing machine have a lever or knob that can be moved to change the feed dog position, unless then knob is broken
