Craftsman 42" mower's brake latch won't release. The parking handle is in the normal position, but the parking brake is engaged. The tractor won't move. I disengaged the brake spring so I could move the mower. However, I have yet to figure out how to get the brake pedal to return to its normal position. Model #917287230 Craftsman Tractor

Try this. Hope this helps. This is your chassis assembly. Look at return springs etc.

Is there a hole in lever with some wear or small scratches? Also, I would look on frame in front of brake lever. Look for a small hole or hook that maybe shows signs of wear. I'll keep digging for info. Let me know if you find it or not. Good luck!

Try pulling on the cable coming down to deck. This cable might be your problem. Also check that the spring on the end of this cable is present and functional.

SOURCE: Tractor Will Not Move And Dies When Brake Is Released

I would check the wires and clean the connectors and make sure seat switch is working. If that is not working, it's like getting off the seat without holding the brake/clutch pedal down or getting off seat with blades engaged. Both will cause engine to die.

OK. You have one of two problems, or maybe a combination of the two.lol. Either the clutch cable that runs from the lever to the deck is frozen, or most likely, the pivot point on the idler arm on the deck is rusted up and is not disengaging. Spray some penatrating oil at the base of the bracket the idler pulley is mounted on (pivot point) while working it back an forth until is loosens up. There is also a spring that is hooked to the idler arm and to a slot in the middle toward the front of the deck to pull the arm forward when the blades are disengaged. Make sure that is in place also.

It sounds like the brake plate is sticking on the transaxle,if you look on the right side of the transaxle a rod and spring run back from the front to a plate, under this plate are two 1/4 pins that actuate the brake pads on the disc, lubricate these pins with wd-40 and move the plate back and forth to see i this frees the problem up.

Sounds like you have a broken spring #148 on diagram, part #169022 that holds the idler arm back. Go to www.searspartsdirect.com and enter the model # of your mower and click on the mower deck to print drawing out, take your deck off the mower and see if all the springs are ok. If the pads are closed on the pulleys and the pads release when you turn the idler arm, the deck is ok. The problem will be a bad or disconnected safety switch that cuts the motor off if you try to ingage the mower. If the switch is disconnected under the seat it will kill the engine when the mower is engaged. I had this problem on my mower, just plug the wiring into this switch or replace it if it is bad.

Seems that your clutch needs adjustment, no biggie here. Get your needle nose pliers and a spare ¼ inch bolt or pin. A small Philips screwdriver will also work. The needle nose pliers are for removing the cotter pin and the screwdriver (or bolt) will hold the brake lever in place while you make the adjustment. Then, check under the right side of the deck (side where the grass discharges) right under the plastic mat where your foot rests and next to the tractor's frame you will see the brake lever with the long spring attached. Have a helper move the brake/clutch pedal so you have a better idea of what's going on down there. Then:

1. Remove the cotter pin, washer, and brake spring from the
adjustable nut
2. Disconnect the adjustable nut from the brake lever assembly
and the parking brake latch.
3. Align the hole in the brake lever with the hole in the frame. Hold
the brake lever in place with your 1/4 inch pin, bolt or the screwdriver.
4. Pull the clutch rod forward until tight. Turn the adjustable nut
until the nut will fit through the hole in the brake lever.
5. Assemble the adjustable nut to the parking brake latch,
brake lever and brake spring. Fasten with the washer and
cotter pin.
6. Remove the 1/4 inch (6 mm) pin, bolt or scredriver.

That should return everything to normal. Assuming that there are no broken or bent parts in your clutch mechanism.
I hope you find this solution helpful. Please rate it and thanks for using Fixya. Good luck!

Sears 10 hp b/s rididng mower

On most riding mowers there are several switches that must be actuated before it will start. First, make sure that blades are disengaged. If there is a handle that engages and disengages them, you might try holding it in the dis-engage position in case the switch is out of adjustment. There is probably one under the seat also. This switch kills everything if you are not sitting in the seat for safety reasons. Also, make sure the parking brake is set, and the gear is in neutral, and not forward or reverse.
Hope some of this helps.
