My sta rite pool heater will turn on. The gas will fire it up and the furnance exhaust will work for 20 seconds then shuts off. The temperture buttons also will no longer work. I changed the thermister with no luck? Any suggestions?

If the heater fails to ignite after three attempts, the heater will automatically go into Lock Out. This is a safety feature on the heater.

Things for you to look at to see what is causing the problem are the display panel and diagnostic lights. When you turn on the heater, is it reading the correct water temp? If not, the Thermister has gone bad and will need to be replaced. When you try to start the heater, is there an Error Code displayed? Which of the Service Lights are coming on when the heater will not light? If it is the Serivce System, that is usually low flow of water. You may have a dirty filter, skimmer or pump basket full of debris, or a valve not completely open.

If the Service System light is the one coming on, then you will need to take off the top two halves of the heater and turn over the Display Panel. There are diagnostic lights on the back side of the panel. There may be a red light next to any of the following:

AGS, AFS, SFS, HLS, PS or THERMISTOR

If there is a red light next to one of these, then that is what has malfunctioned. If you need an Owner's Manual for the heater, you can find one online at the following link:

I am not sure if either of these issues have been solved, but with the AGS light on, you will need to check the flow of water first. If it is below what is needed for the heater, this will light up. If the water flow is fine, then check the water temp on the display panel. If it is readin higher than that of the ACTUAL pool water temp, you need to replace the Thermister.

If the water temp displayed is about that of the pool water, then the Automatic Gas Shutoff will be the next thing to check and replace.

You can tell IF a Sta-Rite heater has been converted by the model number. The Convesion Kit is supposed to come with a sticker stating that the heater has been converted, but there are two options for the kit and the one without the sticker is cheaper.

If you take off the top two halves of the heater, on the Junction Box there should be a Tri-fold card there. Unfold it, if the model number ends with NA it is a Natural Gas Heater, LP would be Propane.

SOURCE: sta rite 400na gives error code 05 after about 30 seconds

I am not sure if you have received an answer to the issue, or not, but just in case! An EO5 error code is an open stack flue sensor, or switch, There are two forms of the stack flue sensor, so you will need to know which one you have on the heater.

What this error code means is that the sensor "read" the flue temp to be over 500 degrees. Usually, it is just gone bad and reading the wrong temp.

SOURCE: Sta Rite SR400 NG heater with code r=5

You can find an Owner's Manual online at the following site:

http://www.inyopools.com/owners_manual/sta-rite_heaters_max-e-therm.pdf

IF you have tried to restart the heater and received the same outcome, the r5, or S, is a badk control board. Sorry about that one!

What you may want to try is resetting the heater. You will need to put the SunTouch in the maintenance mode. Then turn off the heater, turn off the Circuit Breaker for the heater, wait about 15 to 20 minutes, then reverse the order. Circuit breaker, then heater, then try and start the heater without the SunTouch first. If it works, then try with the SunTouch.

When i turn on sta rite spa heater , i can hear it start up , and run for about 20 seconds , then shuts off , EO5 appears on control board with red light next to service heater , whats wrong ?

This is an ignition falure code. What you hear is the fan starting not the heater fireing. This can be a number of things and sorry to say but you should have a repairman out to look at the heater. The gambet runs from very frail parts to just plain dangerous and should have a qualified person check it out.
