Loss of light on screen Dell Inspiron E1705

Screen content is clear but very dark, can just about read screen if shine a bright light onto it. When open lid or press Fn-F8 or change the screen settings, the screen flashes normal brightness for short moment. Any advise appreciated. Peter My computer screen has just gone dark. I can see that the images are there and can manipulate the mouse, though I can't see it. I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 and live in France
What do I do? My Inspiron E1705 works for a few minutes then goes totally dark. If I have a monitor hooked up doing dual so that I can continue using the laptop. If I change Graphic options and clone the display (same setting I used to turn on the clone monitor) it will come back and work properly for 5 or so minutes and then go black again. If I reboot it comes up and works again for 5 or so minutes. I have reloaded the drivers and checked the cables; does any one have any recommendations?

There is a power inverter controlling power to the display, in the monitor of unit, it could be this part needs to be replaced typical repair us$15 part us$45 labor if it changes by moving the monitor it could be the cable that passes through at the hinge about the same cost to repair.

Check your backlight settings, Power Settings, etc.....

You may have Vista (vista has other power settings such as a custom sleep mode which can fail sometimes to work properly with some hardware/monitor configurations).
So Disable any unconventional Hibrid Hibernation options k!

I have a dell inspiron laptop, and a dell monitor hooked up to it, i turn on the monitor and it is very bright for about half a second then it becomes very dark, so dark that it looks like it turned off,...

Does the fault appear on the laptop screen aswell? It appears by your description that the fault is only on the external monitor. If the screen comes on for a moment and then goes blank as described, then this appears to be an invertor fault. It is very common among laptop and tft screens and requires the invertor inside the panel to be replaced / repaired. Simply plug the screen into another computer to confirm.

Dell Inspiron adapter problem

Sounds to me like its a motherboard issue, especially with the randomness of everything and different adapters causing same issues. Get the motherboard replaced if the laptop is still under warranty.

Dell E1705...Same problem...lights on boot up

If the screen goes dark after BIOS, there is a software conflict - either a driver or screen resolution was set incorrectly. a couple of ideas to solve:
boot from disk, or another hard drive - if this works, it confirms the software conflict - which would mean having to re-install the OS.

My Dell Inspiron 6400 is extremely dark. +brightness does nothing

Hi there.
Yes, if you can see a very faint image on the screen that indicates that the inverter or inverter coil has become defective and needs looking at or replacing.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!

Looks like the backlighting on the display has failed, sometimes it is just a lose cable, buy most often the LCD needs to be replaced.

to check the cable see the manual at http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins9400/ for how to get to the LCD cables (usually just under the cover that the power button is on)

Hmm, this could be a problem with the backlight inverter or something as simple as power settings.

In power settings from control panel there should be an option to alter the brightness lever of the screen when on battery.

Have a look in there and set it to default to see if it makes any difference.

Let me know if you need any more help.

Regards

Nick
