Older machines, the model number is found on the throat of the machine and sometimes stamped on the cover over the motor. You can also give me the serial number stamped on the machine and I can look it up for you. I am a certified Bernina/Brother dealer and technician.
Perhaps look at Ebay, you may get lucky before your eyes become crossed looking at the many many Bernina models out there.

If it's a Bernina from a deceased family member, it is probably a good model to have. The old Berninas, if well taken care of, are much sought after machines. I have a few myself, and they are awesome...totally mechanical. When cleaned and oiled regularly, they are workhorses.

Re older BERNINA usually on the front or inside the vertical column on right is the model number
the age can be determined by the serial number

the early models started with the first two numbers indicating the year of manufacture. Eg 58 indicated made in 1958
or 65 -1965
then they changed to a numbering system
if it began with a 1. It was made in 70's second number the yr

eg 12 -1972; 13-1973, 17- 1977
the 2= 1980's and lime above 22=1982. 26= 1986
then 3= 1990's. As above

hope this helps contact me for more info if needed

How to loosen a stuck knee lifter (free-hand system) of a bernina 930 electronic?

Hi Charlotte, could you post a picture of the set up. Take fairly close pics so we can get a good view. One from straight on and one from the bottom. The pics in the service and operational manuals aren't very clear. Thanks, have a great day.

How to remove the top cover of Bernina 830. My machine keeps telling me to rethread. It stitches about 10 stitches then stops

Which Bernina 830 are you referring to? (Yeah, it was crazy of Bernina to use the same numbers to identify different models...). There is the old Bernina 830 Record and the new computerized Bernina 830.

Have you tried rethreading the machine? If so, be sure to ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot. Verify the thread path is correct.

Bernina Record 730 - made in 1965ish. Recently he has started sewing very slowly although the bobbin winder worked normally. We cannot find out why this is happening.

Oh, no! Do NOT give up on your oldie but goodie! The symptoms are common with older mechanical machines. These machines are wonderful and deserve to be given another chance. Most often, the old oil solidifies and causes the moving parts to seize. With persistence, patience, and a couple of very simple supplies, many of these machines are happily sewing again. The secret is a combination of Tri-Flow and heat and making sure that "all" the moving parts get lubed, even the stitch levers and dials. I have resurrected several older Berninas using the following technique. Several completely seized machines required multiple repetitions over a period of days. If the machine does not have any cracked gears, most likely it can be made worthy again and make your grandmother proud that she gave you such a lasting, wonderful gift.

Resist the temptation to try to run the motor until the machine has gone through a thorough "treatment" and is moving freely manually. Once the machine is moving freely, you will rejoice at the happy and satisfied sound it makes!

Good luck with your lovely!

My needle is not movin up or down..switched to zig zag and it moved left and right but no up and down..Im lost without it..whats wrong and how do i fix it? Bernina 1090 s

Have you oiled your Bernina recently/regularly? Consult your owner's manual under the Maintenance section. Sounds like the old oil may have dried and is prohibiting the needle bar from moving. Use good quality (ie Bernina) oil, not 3-in-1, WD-40, cooking oil, or the sewing machine oil from your grandmother's sewing basket). To help free it up, direct heated air from a handheld hairdryer into the interior mechanism of the machine, concentrating on the needle bar area.

Bernina 180 sewing machine 'died'. Was sewing - everything OK. Stopped to turn material, looked away, and when I turned back, screen, machine, everything was dead. Power source is OK. Exchanged cord -...

Hi, sorry to say but very rarely is it the fuse when this happens. You can unscrew the one screw on the ouside and pop the cover open. (carefull as there are wires attached and make sure you are grounded or have discharged any static from yourself).
The fuse will be self-evident but I suspect you will need a visit to your Bernina dealership for a new circuitboard.

Bernina 1090 only sewing backwards

1.Turn the bobbin winder off.
2.You have to reverse the wires on the carbon brushes.

3.Make sure that you have the needle in correctly- with the flat side to the back. Those machines rarely go out of time.
